WALTERS SWEEPS OPENING NIGHT
« on: April 27, 2008, 09:00:22 AM »
Stompin Tom started pole in the first heat with defending barrie speedway champ Dwayne Baker right beside him.Tom pulled away from the field early but was soon reeled in when he started to have a tire go down, but luckely the tire held up long enough to take the checker.Heat two Tom started a the rear of the field but soon made his way through the field on the outside getting by Amanda Connolly #16 then Dwayne Baker #48 .Next was John Baker jr #23 who held his line right to the checker with Tom winning by a nose. The feature  had Tom starting 7th but with the car handling the best ive seen in years, being able to hug the outside groove even in the cool weather, a lot to do with the addition of Ken Donaldson and sticky i do believe,Ken with a world of knowledge in the racing field.Tom soon made his way to the front ,taking the checkers by a car length over Dwayne Baker and 4 car lengths ahead of Amanda Connolly.Small car count was suprising for what turned out to be a beautifull night.Stands were absolutly jammed as admission was free to the regular grandstands.During post race interview Tom did say , see you here next week,so i guess i know where ill be next sat.

Congrats to Tom. Thats at least two years in a row taking the LLM opener at Pete. Baker finished 2nd both years as well but last season it was in Schotanus' car, the #5 one with the old John Gaunt body on it. Nice to see John Baker Jr returning to Pete as well. Any other Barrie or Sunset cars show??

2nd heat...was exciting..great save by J. Baker because Walters punted him outta 2 but he held onto it.... that was a great finish as Walters jumped to the outside and won by inches.

In the Feature to me it looked like Dwayne was getting in/threw the center better..but off and down the straights he was not match for Walters on this night.

How many of the LLM's were even PTBO cars?  beacuse I'm sure 4-5 were not....

I was expecting a few more, seeing as it was a nice night..I know rain was in the forecast but still...last year was cold and misty and rained during the day...and I believe there were 14 or 15 last year.

If all the racers love the track, and by Autumn classic pits racers do, why are the struggling with car counts?  Seems like a cool track.

Congratulations Tom, on the Hat Trick. It was well worth the trip from Wasaga Beach.

Only non-regulars that ran last night were Baker 48 (Barrie), Walters 47 (Sunset/Kawartha), Baker 23 (Mosport), Cronan 84 (Barrie). The rest will be Pete regualrs this year. Missing regulars Mitchell 26, the Crowe clan has 3 cars in total only one of which ran last night, Fulford 56,and Feeney 89.  Admittedly I don't know everone's name but there were 18 cars on the last points night last year and all were regulars. The one's that will be missing this year are Hart 91, the guy who bought the Tiemersma car will likely not be out again, and Tolton 35 is runnig at Varney.

I thought Connelly was running Mosport?  so that would be 5 of the 10 non-regulers..unless she is doing PTBO....I'm not sure.
