Sunset Ready for BIGGEST May Ever
Well, tighten up those helmets! The snow is gone and Sunset Speedway is preparing for the biggest May in Ontario short track history.
From next Sat on, the speedway will ramp up with 5 days of practice heading into opening weekend May 3rd, The 1st Annual Great Lakes Concrete Spring Derby Invitational. Featuring a 100 Lap Limited Late Model Main, 50 Lap Super Stock/Thunder Car Main and a 35 Lap Mini Stock Main.
“This is the first time we have started with such a big event”, Mark Dilley of Sunset Speedway says. “I am very excited. We have had calls from all over the province as we are one of a handful of tracks open this early and the format is unique. It is an invitational format, with a standard number of points going to all registered Sunset drivers rolling through the gate ready to race. What that means is, all the drivers in the points race for 2014 will be there plus many from tracks around Ont. “
May 10th is a real power house, Sunset will host the $5000 to win APC Auto Parts Pro Late 100. This will bring Pro Late Model cars to Sunset from all over the province, along with a bunch of Late Model Sunset regulars. Dilley says, “pre registration is bigger than expected and could be the race of the year, I think we have the rule package perfect for all the different style of Late Model cars.”
Along with the Pro Late Models, will be the return of the always exciting Pro Challenge cars in their season opener and the Sunset Mini Stocks will compete for Sunset Super Series points.
May 17th and 18th Moving into the long weekend Sat night will see a 50 Lap Late Model Main, along with Super Stocks and Mini Stocks all competing for Sunset Super Series points.
May 18th will see the return of OSCAAR and the Lucas Oil TQ Midgets. This will be a great show as it has been one of our flag ship weekends over the last 6 years. “It is exciting to see all three classes kick their 2014 seasons off at Sunset.” Dilley says.
Both OSCAAR classes will take to the track, the always exciting Outlaw Super Late Model will battle in a 50 lap main and the growing Modifieds will make their season debut. It doesn’t end there, the wild winged Lucas Oil Midgets will delight with their 3 and 4 wide racing. It will be a night to remember.
May 24th and 31st will finish the month off, as Sunset regulars compete for the season ending Sunset Super Series points funds. Both nights will feature 50 lap Late Model mains along with Super Stocks and Mini Stocks.
Dilley guarantees the biggest season ever at Sunset Speedway, “I believe we will see over 220 different race cars in the month of May alone,” stated Dilley, “and that number could be low, as Sunset has 101 pre registered cars for the Sunset Super Series.”
