Ontario Modifieds Racing Series Adds Another 2014 First Time Feature Winner
By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media
While growing up, our parents always told us that everyone needed a chance to play. That message must have reached the drivers with the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series - powered by Torque Builders Inc. For the 4th time on the 2014 schedule, a different feature event winner was posing for victory lane photos following the Saturday, July 12th event at Peterborough Speedway.
If it weren't for bad luck, Alex Lees' 2014 race season may have had no luck at all. The older of a pair of twin brothers from Cameron (near Lindsay, Ontario) experienced engine issues and also watched as his #07 OMRS machine burst into flames on the same night as his sibling took the main event. Taking the green flag from the pole position in the most recent feature tilt at the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City, Lees was able to lead every lap on the way to his first checkered flag of the year.
A graduate of the Mini Stock division and a former Autumn Colours Classic polesitter, Lees got a jump on outside front row starter Ryan Dick and was able to build a sizable cushion on the rest of the field. The driver of the #07 faced a late race challenge that likely would have been talked about around the family's holiday dinner table for years, as his brother Nick finished 2nd. Rob Warnes was 3rd, with Rick Warnes and Ryan Dick completing the top 5 finishers.
OMRS Modified News & Notes: Qualifying heat race wins went to Rob Warnes and Nick Lees...Brad Stevenson had a short main event run in the #77 machine, taking the car to infield escape road halfway through the 20 lap feature...Rick Warnes had a bit of a scare during one of the afternoon's practice sessions. His #90 machine lost a radiator hose, causing the car to spin in the fluids and made contact with the 4th turn wall. Damage was minimal and limited to a twisted front bumper and some bent sheet metal that the crew was able to repair before the qualifying heats.
