Frostoberfest Two Ends Season At Flamboro Speedway As Shaw And Lapcevich Crowned Champions
By Randy Spencer - A long and exciting season came to an end here Saturday night at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway with the postponed part of Frostoberfest, the Triple 50's for the Grisdale Late Models. Twenty Late Models were signed in for the final event on the racing calendar for 2016 at Flamboro and at any short track in Ontario. The weather was mild for late October and the racing didn't disappoint.
Nascar Canada Pinty's Champion Cayden Lapcevich was in the 76 London Recreational Late Model and didn't look out of place as he turned a fast lap of 15.599 to start on the pole for the first of three fifty lap races. The Mini Stocks were also back for a Twin 30 feature event. In time trials, Lane Zardo turned a fast lap to get the pole with a time of 18.325. Twenty one cars were on hand for the Mini Stock final race of 2016.
In the first thirty lapper for Mini Stocks, Brian Wilson started third and found his way to the front fairly quick and stayed there picking up the first feature win. Samantha Shaw finished second followed by Zardo, Jason Tolton and Phil Givens. In race two, the battle was between Zardo and Shaw. They started 12th and 13th respectively in the field. Russ Aicken was leading early, got loose and hit the wall out of two and collected the top ten cars in the field putting Zardo in the lead followed by Shaw. Shaw showed she has come a long way and continues to make the Shaw name well known for winning in short track racing in Ontario as she got by Zardo to take the lead and picked up the checkered flag and the overall championship for the night. Congratulations Sam!!
In the first of the Triple 50's for Late Models, Lapcevich would lead all the way for the win but was challenged by Andrew Gressel, Billy Schwartzenburg and J.R. Fitzpatrick. Shawn Chenoweth missed time trials and had to start at the back but finished fifth. In race two, Gressel didn't make the green. The field was inverted and Lapcevich started 15th. Chenoweth started 11th and soon found his way to the front and he dominated winning by half a track followed by Fitzpatrick, Lapcevich, Mat Box and Matt Lockwood. The final race of the night saw Schwartzenberg and Jason Parker on the pole. They battled early for the top spot but Chenoweth once again made a bee line for the front and took the lead. Fitzpatrick had a strong run finishing second followed by Lapcevich, Schwartzenberg and Box. Schwartzenberg and Lapcevich had a heated battle for the last half of the race and a lot of paint was exchanged. The overall winner was a tie between Lapcevich and Chenoweth but the tie breaker was the first race which Lapcevich won so he was declared the overall winner.
