When the green flag drops at Autodrome Granby for the Can-Am Sprint Car
Challenge this Friday, May 11 it will mark the beginning of the 17th
season of competition for The Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS); Canada’s
longest running sprint car organization. The 2 day, $5,000 to win race
will be co-sanctioned with The Empire Super Sprints (ESS) and Patriot
Sprint Tour (PST) Sprint Cars of New England (SCONE) and The Corr/Pak
Sprints of Ohswken Speedway (CP).

“I can’t think of a better way to kick off our 17th season,” stated
Southern Ontario Sprints President Mike Ferrell. “Ontario and Quebec
have really become a strong hold for sprint car racing and I’m very
pleased that the area has another marquee event and that we could be a
part of it.”

The 2 day race will conclude Saturday evening with a 30 lap A-Main that
will feature a $25,000 purse with a $5,000 share going to the winner.
The Friday evening preliminary night will include qualifying, heat race
events and twin 15 lap features paying $500 to win along with a
guarantee of a top 10 starting spot in Saturday night’s finale. The
Saturday night will include group time trials and B Main(s) to lock in
the 28 car starting field for the $5,000 to win, $500 to start main event.

Drivers meeting will be 6pm on Friday. Fuel and tires are available at
the track. This event is included in the 2012 Southern Ontario Sprints
Schedule as a show-up points event for the Saturday feature. Teams must
be 2012 SOS members and registed as an SOS entry prior to event to
qualify for points. Drivers can see Mike or Loree Ferrell at the track
to register.

“Whoever wins the A Main is going to earn their money,” said Ferrell.
“You have cars coming from all over. There will be several states and
provinces represented and I think it really says a lot about how far
sprint car racing has come our area in terms of the level of competition
and the organizations working together.”

Over the past 2 decades Quebec has earned a reputation as one of the
true hotbeds of sprint car racing as they have produced several great
sprint car drivers and events typically run in front of capacity crowds.

“There will definitely be electricity in the air,” said Ferrell. “Quebec
fans are die-hards and are very passionate about sprint car racing. I
can’t think of a better area to host an event of this magnitude.”

The Can-Am Sprint Car Challenge will also kick off what should be an
intense battle for the 2012 Southern Ontario Sprints Championship.
“General” Lee Ladouceur of Alexandria, Ontario captured his first ever
SOS championship last season but will face stiff competition as he tries
to defend his title against the likes of 2-time Southern Ontario Sprints
champion Warren Mahoney, last year’s series runner-up Travis Cunningham,
2-time SOS feature winner Chris Jones and veteran Bob Crawford.

“I am really looking forward to this year’s championship chase,” said
Ferrell. Traditionally The SOS championship chase has always been very
close and there have been some wild finishes. I have no idea who will
win this year’s title but I am sure that whoever does will have to be on
top of their game.”
