OHSWEKEN SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS CANCELLED BY RAIN

by Tommy Goudge (September 5, 2008) -
Persistent rain showers forced the cancellation of Season Championship Night presented by Iroquois Poker at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night.  The event will not be made up.  Next up on the Ohsweken schedule is the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals weekend coming up Friday, September 12 and Saturday, September 13.  Anyone who purchased a wristband tonight may use them next Friday, September 12th for the Night Before the Nationals events.

In light of tonight's rainout, Speedway officials have decided to add the Friday Night Fun Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, and ESSO Thunder Stocks to the schedule as part of the Night Before the Nationals festivities.  The events will be non-points for those divisions, while 50 show-up points will be awarded to any registered Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division driver who signs in for competition and is race ready on either Friday or Saturday night.  Although the points championship is now officially finished for the season, the ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Friday Night Fun Stocks will still be running the extra-distance features they were scheduled to run tonight, and will be racing for tonight's increased purse next Friday night.

Cody McPherson claimed the ESSO Thunder Stocks crown with a season of domination, during which he visited Engine Pro Racing Winner's Circle no less than 8 times, while Ryan Dinning, Glen Leinen, Rob Disher, Brad Bacher, Mike Thorne, Michelle, Johnson, Terry Osmond, Chris Dickie, and Brian Pescetti round out the top 10.

In the ESSO Mini-Stock division, Abel Castelein claimed the track championship for the second year in a row, while Mitchell Brown, Rick Emberson, Kevin Hilborn, Brent Hill, Chase Hess, Mark Thorne, Dan Stewart, Mike Giberson, and the 05 Racing team of Dave Goodacre and Rick Robinson are the rest of the top 10.

The Friday Night Fun Stocks enjoyed a successful first season at Ohsweken, with Lee Hils now officially the first ever champion in the division.  Lee's son Chris finishes the season 2nd, while Karl Sault, Mike Taylor, Kacey Huffman, Jessie McDonald, Steven Hils, Dale Cooke, Dave Hils, and Trevor Deboer make up the rest of the top 10.

The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car championship, meanwhile, will not be official until after the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals when the show-up points are awarded, however all of the Corr/Pak competitors are expected to be in competition next weekend, meaning Keith Dempster is set to be crowned the first ever champion for the Corr/Pak division.  Jared Zimbardi will likely finish the season ranked 2nd in the standings, while 3rd place Ryan Hunsinger will also be crowned the first Rookie of the Year for the new division.  Rounding out the top 10 positions who will all have a share in the substantial point fund if they sign in next weekend are; Kevin Job, Glenn Styres, Rob Pietz, Dave Dykstra, Brad Malloy, Mikey Kruchka, and John Riegling.

All of the 2008 Ohsweken Speedway champions and award winners will be honoured at the annual awards banquet on Saturday night, November 15.  Tickets will be available from Sue Bell in the tech barn at the Speedway next weekend during the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals events.

Reserved seats are available for purchase for both the Night Before the Nationals on Friday, September 12, and the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals on Saturday, September 13.  Last season, 76 of the best 360 sprint cars in the Northeast came together at Ohsweken for the 3rd annual edition of the event, with Quebec driver Steve Poirier taking the feature win for the 2nd year in a row.  This year, the huge field of competitors will be looking to end Poirier's streak and take home the $8,000 winner's cheque, as well as the bragging rights that go along with winning this great event.  Don't miss any of the exciting Nationals action: Visit HYPERLINK http://www.OhswekenSpeedway.com now for details on how to reserve your seats!
