Haldex) started outside the front row of the Southern Ontario Sprints
A-Main and led all 25 laps on route to his second victory of the season
at Brighton on Saturday night. The Brantford, Ont. native outdueled
polesitter Rick Wilson (No.42w Riverside Bar) as the top duo ran first
and second for the full distance.
The race saw five yellow flags for minor incidents. The first caution of
the night came on lap three when Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Excel Tower
Service) spun over the berm in turn two. Once the race restarted,
Sandercock was only able to complete one more lap before rolling to a
stop in the turn three exit lane for the second caution. That was the
end of Sandercock’s night.
On the ensuing single-file restart, Brown got the best jump and grew a
lead of nearly 10 car lengths over Wilson. Justin Martin (No.7m Vortex
Insulation) began to carve out the top line while running third.
Another caution was necessary when Frank Baranowski (No.66 OTR Filters)
got off track and stopped in the run off area in turn four.
An exciting three-car battle for fourth developed between Tyler Rand
(No.84 Five Star Racing Products), Glenn Styres (No.0 Arrow Express),
and Keith Dempster (No.5 Renway Energy). Styres ran the high groove
while Dempster was sandwiched in the middle of the two drivers.
Styres made the pass on the outside to take over fourth, and began to
track down Martin for third. But his hopes of extending the points lead
with a main event win were dashed when he spun over the berm in turn one
on lap 11.
The ensuing green flag run gave Wilson his best chance to get by Brown
in lapped traffic with six to go. Brown struggled to get by a flurry of
lapped cars in turn three and four as Wilson closed the gap. But when
Rand stopped in turn four on lap 20 and drew the final caution of the
race, Brown prevailed on the traffic-free restart.
Wilson got his best restart of the night for the five lap dash, but
Brown was simply too strong on the bottom. He paced the field for the
final laps to lead all 25 circuits in his second SOS win of the season.
Dempster was able to get by Martin for third in the closing laps.
Dempster ran the bottom while Martin chased the topside of the track.
The bottom was quicker in turns one and two, while the top was fastest
at the other end. Martin couldn’t fend off Dempster’s attack and settled
for fourth. Chris Jones (No.11j Jones Automotive) charged from his
ninth-place starting spot to finish fifth.
Brown, Rand, and Martin were the heat race winners.
