Sunset's new Time Trials Format....Thoughts?

I think it's a great idea for a number of reasons, it's a neat little twist for everyone...I really like that it rotates between the classes, so each class will have TT,Heat,Heat in 3 week cycles.
It will be cool to see track records set and broken, good that every car in every class will get a chance to be on the track by themselves so there sponsers get proper exposure.
It will "speed up" the nights program eliminating thoese heats, it's also good because if your a little bit late showing up your not missing any "racing".

Our web guy is going to get the Time Trials page and the Looking for Cars page fixed up right away so you can open them and print.

We are doing major construction on our website and it is going to be much easier to follow once it is all done. Stay tuned.

For anyone that couldn't get it loaded...
Quote
Sunset Speedway Time Trials 2011

·         Each class Late Model, Super Stock and Mini Stock will time trial 6 times over the course of the regular season ( please see schedule below)

·         Driver will draw a number upon entry into speedway this will determine qualifying order.

·         All cars must be on pit road in qualifying order a min of 15 minutes prior to opening ceremonies failure to do so will result in disqualification from time trials and will have to run last chance when applicable.

·          Driver and one crew member will be allowed on pit road for qualifying, driver will be in the car ready to race during open ceremonies, at the conclusion of the national anthem the first car will be on track.

·         Race car will enter the track from pit road exit take green, white and checkered then exit the track down pit road entry stopping before transponder line.

·         Driver will exit race car at no time will any driver or crew member touch the race car, at the end of qualifying drivers will get in there cars and drive them to pit area.

·         Remember if you spin you are on your time get it fired and get going you only have 2 laps

·         In the case of a timing error it will be the discretion of the race track as to how many laps and where in the order the car will fall.

·         Top 5 cars will go straight to tech building

·         18 cars will qualify thru time the rest of the field will be made up thru the last chance race.

·         In the case of a rain out on your night it will be a wash and the following week will follow the attached schedule it goes by dates not nights.

·         POINTS

1.       1.  16           10.  6

2.       2. 14           11.  5

3.       3. 13           12.  5

4.       4. 12           13.  4

5.       5. 11           14.   4

6.       6. 10           15.   3

7.       7. 9             16.   3

8.       8. 8             17.   2

9.       9. 7             18.   2

We at the speedway are very excited about this format.  It will save the racers money, speed up the nights, give the drivers a new challenge in time trialing and will be exciting for the fans as they watch their favorite driver on the NEW score board push it to the limits to try and knock the rest off the board.

As a fan, I personally think that time trials suck and I think most fans would agree. For example, if you would look at the T.V. ratings for a Nascar, or F1 race, and then look at the T.V. ratings for qualifying the day before I think that would be a big difference. Fans come to watch racing, not cars driving around by themselves!

I like the idea of using practice times for starting positions or move to a multi car qualifying format. Put 5 cars out at a time staggered for qualifying and see what happens. Single car runs on a short track are fine for those of us that like to follow things like that but for the general fan it is not a big deal. LM qualifying is a different deal but SS and mini-stocks need to mix it up a bit.

Practice Times are just that practice times among other things going on at the same time. It does not mean a slower time might not be faster when getting down to business.

Throw 3 or so cars out at the same time for qualifying. would make it a little more interested for the average fan, plus it gets the job done quicker, especially if 40 ministocks show up on their time trials night.  Works great for dirt racing, they throw out about 8ish cars at once.  a 70+ field of super late models at Volusia back in February qualified in no time with the multi-car format.

...
TIME TRIALS ARE BORING, IF THIS IS WHAT SUNSET IS GOING TO DO AND NOT RUN HEATS THIS WILL END ME GOING TO WATCH THERE AND I'M AN HOUR 1/4 AWAY, I DON'T THINK THE FANS WILL LIKE IT !
BTW IS ADMISSION PRICES DOWN NOW THAT WE DON'T GET TO SEE HEATS ?
