Well NASCAR doesn't like it when teams or manufacturers dominate. Especially if they are manufacturers that aren't friendly to NASCAR...

Didn't all of this restrictor plate business really get it's start in 1971 when NASCAR told Chrysler they could not run the Hemi and the winged cars together anymore? Chrysler was handing the C and F teams their ass and there was nothing that could be done about it. NASCAR told the Mopar people you can run the Hemi, or you can run the winged car with a destroked small block (405ci IIRC) which sucked (and by doing so NASCAR killed the wing cars)... The King said that the 1970 Superbird would do 250 with no plate and today's tires BTW... so here we are in 2008 with the aero cars so out of control then we have to all have the same cars with different nosecones... Don't believe the hype about COT... those cars have no downforce compared to the old cars. The new car won't turn. It was about aero wars, not so much about safety.

NASCAR outlawed the Hemi in '66, the wing cars in '71 (virtually), and now the car of yesterday... It is all about getting ALL of the cars to run within less than a second of each other, and hopefully making big corporations friendly to NASCAR happy. There may have been a few safety type innovations popped in there too, but it ain't the whole deal.

I like the O/B rule for D and T because there are less wrecks... actually there should be a Kyle Busch line for every track because that guy drives WAYYYY low some places where he shouldn't in my opinion  ;D ;D

Tex, that's an awesome point and you are definately on to something. If you think about, most of these safety innovations could've been made on the old car - they just decided while doing safety changes, why not even up things with the competition? Also, if you want to talk about NASCAR not wanting teams or manufactures to dominate, look at the Nationwide Series. Toyota was dominating each week so therefore NASCAR put a plate on their motor to restrict the horesepower so therefore they'd even things out when Toyota had worked hard to find this horsepower. Why? Because of what you said - NASCAR likes things close. In reality, they should've let the others team work their way to finding the answer. So good job Tex!

what? the reason the cot is safer is because it is the cot. driver moved away from the door and a larger greenhouse area neither or which could have been down with the aero sensitive cars of last year.

I wasn't denying there wasn't some safety innovations... but the new car wasn't all about safety unlike NASCAR might say. The aero cars were getting out of control and NASCAR wanted to curb them. Now there is one chassis design for every car out there. Sounds kinda like modern day IROC to me... Keep all the cars the same and allow no technological advances, let the drivers duel it out amongst themselves.

I'd argue SAFER barriers and the Hans device were much more important safety innovations than the COT.

I have to counter your point on Toyota working hard to find that horsepower. I'll have to admit, they did work, but not as hard as you think. Before they were brought into NASCAR, the other manufacturers were told by NASCAR to give Toyota an engine for reference. Toyota has taken all of the things that GM, Dodge and Ford has learned over the decades racing and incorporated it into an engine. No wonder they are faster, they were given a head start. And HELL YES, I am a Toyota hater. Used to be a big GM guy but have turned that into a GM, FORD, DODGE guy. Thank God Tony has defected back.

What Roush said about "boatloads of dollars from Japan" is really coming true. They threw a ton of cash at open wheel, off road and GTP in order to dominate. It took probably 3 years for Dodge to get some HP when they returned to NASCAR... Toyota got it handed to them. Welcome to the new "NASCAR"...  ;D :o

Oh yeah I'm a Mopar/Penske guy if y'all haven't figured that one out. I even tolerated the Penske/Phord years... Those black T-Birds flew  ;D

That's a very good point about the money as look what they're paying teams to take their brand - we all heard about the contract that went on with Dale Jarrett. It was said to be worth over a million just because he had a championship provisional. Anybody remember that blitz?
