Gotta disagree with you guys here in a big way!!! Sean has never impressed me with his decision making or flaging ability... If youve ever been in a race tower/control center when a NCATS race takes place youd know why I say this!!LOL Best flagman currently is Dale from Oshweken/TQ Midgets by a mile!!!! That former Barrie/Sunset guy that now resides at Scotia Speedworld in HALIFAX and does the Carquest Pro Stock tour isnt bad either!!! Just forget his name though but he's been flagging races since Sean was a mere twinkle in his pappy's eyes!FLMAO

What makes a starter good?  This is a matter of opinion.  Is it the ability to wave the flags?  Or is it his or her decision making abillity?

Knowing Sean and Dale personally.  I would say Dale is by far better with the flags then Sean.  Dale can put on a show.

As a Nascar starter though Sean does not get to make decisions.  Decisions are made by race control.   Sean is told when to put it out.  If you watch the NASCAR program that was filmed at Charlotte this year it shows race control telling the starter when to do things.

If you guys really want to see someone put on a show with flags then go to Tulsa this weekend and watch Roger Slack.

Agreed Thayne !!! Dan Coates did a remarkable job when he took over the main stand midway through last season imo. I really enjoy watching Dale flag a race too, that guy is worth the price of admission alone, just seeing the way he twirls and emalgimates the flags around. But getting back to Sean, that guy must have a neck like a hootin owl as hes constantly turning around to get the call from the higher ups at NASCAR like Richard Coughlin and now Brad Moran I guess!!! In my mind a good flagman makes his own calls and stands by them, something that just doesnt happen in NCATS racing at all. When at Barrie and Sunset my Dad had "carte blanche" to make whatever calls he felt necessary and this included reigns under the Watson/Coates/Moran era at Barrie as well as the Shakell/Slaughter/Coates and for one season the Wes Good era at Sunset.

Yes a good starter makes his own calls, stands by them, and trusts his officials working with him.

The race director normally has the best eyes of them all.  Trust me when I say you see more sitting in the grandstands then you do standing over the track looking down.  Its a totally different angle.

Sean is not allowed that freedom.  He has to allow the race director to make that call.  There is just more then Coughlin and now Moran in there making those calls though.  There is Richard Buck, Mike Verlatti and Trevor (Race Director) and now Moran.

Dale has total freedom to make calls at Ohsweken Speedway.  Dale does confer with his race director and corner flagman quite often.  Together they work well as a team.  Sure they might not make the right calls in the eyes of some, but they stand by the calls that are made.

Good topic

Starting last weekend Dan Coates has taken over the flag stand at Sunset. He made an impression on his first night there.
