TOYO TIRES F1600 CHAMPIONSHIP MIXES OLD WITH NEW AT CANADIAN HISTORIC GRAND PRIX THIS WEEKEND
Series Heads Back to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for Rounds 3 & 4
in Support of Formula Ford Feature
TORONTO, ON (June 18, 2015) – Formula Ford racing in Ontario has been a proud and continuous institution for more than 40 years and has produced some of motorsport’s greatest talents at home and around the world.
This weekend, many examples of that rich history will come together at a single event, the Canadian Historic Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario.
The inclusion of the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship in the weekend’s events will put some of the category’s most modern and advanced machinery – including chassis such as Spectrum, Mygale, Van Diemen and Piper fitted with the Honda engines that set the standard today – on display alongside the many vintage marques that have raced thousands of miles around Canadian circuits.
One of the weekend’s headline events will be known as the “Oliver Clubine Memorial” in celebration of its namesake’s many years of involvement in F1600 racing. Oliver Clubine is the father of Toyo Tires F1600 Championship team owner David Clubine and the founder of Britain West Motorsport, which David now runs. Oliver passed away in April 2014, and David intends to come out of retirement to compete for the trophy that bears his father’s name on this Father’s Day weekend.
Reid Arnold looks to take control of the A Class point standings. Michael Adams was utterly dominant with his two poles and two wins in the opening rounds of the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship season at Victoria Day SpeedFest. But Adams is planning to contest only the Formula 1600 Super Series events this year while he concentrates on his mechanical engineering studies, leaving the door wide open for Reid Arnold of Brian Graham Racing to take control of the title fight.
“I learned a lot in the Victoria Day races,” Arnold says of the pair of second-place finishes that have put him second in the point standings. “It would be nice if Michael could be here this weekend so that I could get a shot at a win on the same terms. But another chance to prove myself at Mosport will be almost as good.”
Several other drivers are poised to capitalize on the absence of a number of Super Series competitors, particularly Arnold’s BGR teammates Mikhail Goikhberg and rookie Ben Hurst.
A possible upset to Arnold’s victory hopes comes in the form of a fourth BGR entry for Zacharie Robichon, who is hot off the heels of a dramatic last-turn pass for victory in the second F1600 Super Series race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve supporting the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix. Robichon has had a busy couple of weeks: he recently added graduation from university to his growing list of accomplishments.
James Bateman is a new competitor joining the A Class field this weekend. Bateman will be fielding a Van Diemen Honda that he recently acquired from Britain West Motorsport.
B Class field looks to oust Wagland from points lead. Connor Wagland began his 2015 B Class campaign with the same form that won him the title last year by earning a pair of poles and a pair of wins at Victoria Day SpeedFest.
But the season is young, and a field full of combatants is looking to ensure that a chance for Wagland to earn a repeat doesn’t come easily.
Second place in the point standings is currently occupied by Amy Castell, who earned her first race win last season and is ready to shine. She’s followed closely by Steve Bodrug – who was a major thorn in Wagland’s side on Victoria Day weekend – and perennial challenger Iron Man Mike Lee.
The Canadian Historic Grand Prix, presented annually by the Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada, runs from Friday June 19th to Sunday June 21st at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario. Tickets are $30 per person for the weekend and are available at the gate or online at canadianhistoricgrandprix.com.

The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series is the premiere open wheel series in Ontario, sanctioned by CASC Ontario Region and proudly supported by Toyo Tires, Honda HPD, Heather’s Heros, Cove Dentistry, Stäubli, Lincoln Electric and MK Technologies. The series is comprised of a six event, double-header format and competes at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Shannonville Motorsport Park and Calabogie Motorsports Park.
The Formula 1600 Super Series is the combined premiere events of the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series from Ontario and the Toyo Tires Formula Tour 1600 Series from Quebec. The series is comprised of a four event, double-header format and competes at CTMP’s Victoria Day SpeedFest, Formula One Grand Prix of Montreal, the Bay of Quinte Grand Prix at Shannonville Motorsport Park and the Grand Prix of Trois Rivières
