CAPITAL CITY SPEEDWAY TO HOST LONE ONTARIO SERIE ACT CASTROL EVENT

Tuesday, June 05 2007 @ 02:30 PM EDT
Contributed by: ACT Staff

The lone Ontario appearance for the American-Canadian Tour’s Série ACT Castrol is set for this Saturday (June 9) at the 3/8ths mile

Capital City Speedway near Ottawa. The TOROMONT CAT 100 is the third of 12 events on the 2007 schedule for the Canadian Late Model Tour. Earlier races have been held at the Autodrome Montmagny Speedway near Quebec City and the Autodrome St-Eustache, outside of Montreal.

On the strength of two top three finishes, Jean-François Déry of Val Belair, Qc leads the Série ACT Castrol standings by two points over Terrebonne, Quebec’s Sylvain Lacombe (161-159).   Karl Allard from St-Felicien, Qc is third, a mere seven points behind runner-up Lacombe. Donald Theetge, who carried the checkers on May 19 at Montmagny, a high banked 3/8ths mile oval and Normand Lavigueur, winner at St-Eustache, a 4/10th mile flat paved oval on May 26, are not among the top three in the standings although Lavigueur’s victory moved him into the top five.

Looking to take on the Quebec and U.S. invaders are a pair of local drivers – Spencer MacPherson and Sean Kennedy. MacPherson, from MacPherson at speed in the Serie ACT Castrol season opener at Autodrome Montmagny Speedway Carleton Place, is a registered rookie competitor on the Série ACT Castrol. The 18 year-old, who cut his racing teeth at the Ottawa speedplant, ran to a very respectable 15th place finish in the 2007 opener at Montmagny. Kennedy, 39, is a first year Late Model driver after many years of competition, including a championship in the Legends division at the track. In just four Late Model starts, Kennedy has already claimed a feature win.

“We’re really looking forward to having the Série ACT Castrol competitors compete with us Saturday at Capital City Speedway,” Kennedy said. “As a new competitor in the division, there will be a lot to learn from the drivers who come in from other tracks.”

Claude Leclerc, a veteran racer of nearly 30 years and a competitor on both the Série ACT Castrol and the ACT Late Model Tour, has been to the Capital City speedplant many times over the years. “I think the fans will see a good race this Saturday because we use a handicap system to line up the races – the more successful drivers will start toward the back. They will have to be patient as they try to come forward through the field,” the Lanoraie, Qc driver commented.

Drivers who’ve also filed an entry for Saturday’s TOROMONT CAT 100 include Eric Chase of Milton, VT and Warkworth, Ontario’s Derek Lynch. Chase and Lynch are both familiar with the 3/8ths mile semi-banked oval after competing in a $5,000 to win Late Model spectacular last fall. Lynch finished fourth and Chase fifth in the event won by local favorite Steve Munro.

ACT, one of North America’s oldest independent short track stock car sanctioning bodies, announced its return to Canada last fall following a ten year absence when the Vermont-based group announced it would manage and administer Quebec’s very popular and successful Late Model series 2007. Track management at Capital City Speedway began the process of converting its top division into an ACT legal Late Model last year. This conversion will allow Ottawa-area racers the opportunity to venture out to Série ACT Castrol and ACT Tour events on both sides of the border.
