By Greg Calnan – Southern Ontario Sprints points leader Chris Jones used
good luck and some hard work to draw one race closer to his first ever
series championship. Mechanical issues in his qualifying heat couldn’t
slow the Demorestville, Ontario native down as he cruised to his fourth
win of the season and third in a row at Brighton Speedway.
Jones had good fortune on his side and he drew pole position for both
his heat and the 20 lap feature. Glenn Styres started second in the main
event and was the only driver able to challenge for the win. The point
leader jumped out to the early lead and put good distance between
himself and Styres.
Lapped traffic helped tighten the gap between the top two in the closing
laps, but it wasn’t enough for Styres to attempt a pass on the leader.
Jones went on to win the feature which was completed in a blistering 4
minutes and 48 seconds. It was his third straight victory at the 1/3
mile oval.
Styres finished second while second place in points, Jamie Collard, was
third. Dain Naida and Charlie Sandercock completed the top five. The
hard charger of the race was Rick Wilson, who cut a tire in his heat and
drove from 15th to 7th in the caution free event.
With the win Jones draws one step closer to his first career SOS
championship with just one race remaining. The second half of the Labour
Day Classic takes place Sunday, September 1st at Brighton Speedway and
could mark the first time in the 18 season history of the SOS that a
local driver wins the title. Race time is 6pm and includes both the
finale points race of the season along with an exhibition wingless dash
at the conclusion of the evening. For more information visit
