Nascar on XM??
« on: December 15, 2006, 03:02:28 AM »
For those of you that have XM sattelite radio, ever wonder why you can't get 144 and the Nascar shows that they promote on the other channels?I'm not the greatest Jimmie Johnson or Dale Jr or IRL fan,but I wouldn't mind listening to their southern drawl occasionally.Anyways,I emailed XM and guess what ! They aren't allowed to broadcast those programs in Canada due to "contractual issues".Whouda thunk that the all conquering  TSN-Canadian Tire-Nascar  Canada juggernaught is so powerfull that they can even control things not on this planet!!!

That's why many of us get American satellite radios and then just give a fake American address  for activation(I got my fake American address off a box off  of cereal ) besides who really wants all those crappy french programs.

Your problems have just begun since Sirrius has the rights to NASCAR in 07 and things such as the Tony Stewart Show have already begun on Sirrius a week ago Thursday, besides you cant get Howard Stern on XM.

Are there  different signals for Canada and the US for XM and Sirius ? I was going to look into the Sirius package to get the Nascar broadcasts and to get a continuous music signal when traveling. I thought the signals would be the same. Does the CRTC have their slimy little fingers on satellite radio too? If so, then I guess I'll put off this Christmas gift for now and try and sign up with a US address at a later date.

I just called the phone number on the Sirius Canada site and spoke to a representative. I asked if the Nascar channel is going to be available in Canada? I was told yes. (It's listed on the channel guide). I also asked if I would  continue to receive  signals if I travelled to the US. Again, I was told yes. This will be handy when travelling to different races for me. It gets annoying listening to post race shows fading out, or even when just listening to music.

The CRTC had to approve a canadian broadcasting licence to both sirius and xm to sell canandian subscriptions.  I got the US sirius subscription to make sure I was getting what I wanted.   I am a little foggy on the CRTC regs but it is in the neighbourhood of one in 7 channels are to be french, heavy canadian content etc etc.  I would imagine that in order to meet canadian content most stations will be different canadian versions outside of peak listenin hours so you will get the races but at night you might not get the nascar programming.

The regulated Canadian content is only on the Canadian Channels tat were added when XM and Sirius got approval in Canada.  All the other channels are the same as in the US, including NASCAR 128 on Sirius.  The only difference between Canadian and US subscriptions is that some channels in the US are blocked in Canada, to maintain a ratio of 1 canadian channel for every 8 US.  With the US subscription you get all channels (incl. Canadian) with none blocked.

FYI
I broke down and purchased a Sirius Satelite system. You DO get the Nascar signal in Canada. It's a neat toy and I can't wait to travel with it. The signal is crystal clear. Apparently I should be able to pick up the MRN and PRN shows as well. We'll see. I'm listening to The Morning Drive Show right now. They're currently discussing the COT.
