The original track was a clay flat track......not very good to drive on when it had just rained.  There's not a whole lot of traction on wet clay.  The 1/4 mile track which was built inside the clay track was paved and banked, with no walls around it, so when you went off the paved track, you would oftentimes get stuck in the sand surrounding the racing surface.

A friend of mine owned the Wasaga Race Track in the 50's & 60's, and probably the 70's, along with the Hitching Post Dine and Dance pavillion which was located at the front of the property.

As a young teenager I actually worked for Bob Smith (the owner) for several years both at the track (I ran the concession stands on race Days/Nites) as well as at the Hitching Post at other times.  It was quite a place, with lots and lots of racing story memories.

A lot of race drivers, from all over Ontario, whose names many of you will remember, used to come to "The Beach" to race on Saturday nites, as well as to spend time on the beach when they were not at the track.  It wasn't unusual to see 20 - 25 race cars behind tow vehicles parked on the beach when they weren't at the track.

blkflagagain - I'm glad you like it. Check out the rest of the site when you get a chance. There's tons more.

barrie97ps - in the top aerial photo you can see another, larger oval around the paved oval. The larger one is the old horse track that was also used for stock car racing before the paved track was built. I don't know the exact dates for it but it would have been the early - mid 1950's.  The paved track was built in 1956.

Yes, the fall is pretty good too, I used to go to a few ghost towns in Ontario usually in the fall.

It's quite odd that any of these places exist, you would think that whoever owns the land would use it for some kind of development. I guess we're lucky to see these places.

The best time to go ghost track hunting is in the early spring after the snow has melted and the ground has hardened but before the grass and weeds have really started growing. It's easier to find things.

Didn't see anything like that, but it is all heavy pine brush area... and I didn't go on the property.

We'll have to see what is there this summer.

Cool, maybe this summer I might swing by the site of Orillia Speedway and see if anything is still there. There is a gate, possibly two entrances to the site and a high hill right by the road, so some investigation is required.

I saw some photos of Orillia taken in the early 1990's. There was a light tower standing in the old infield at the time.

Yep Bluewater was it. I'm going to start looking to find this "natural amphitheater".

Edit: A dirt track located directly next to a fast moving river... man guys were fearless back then!

There is a gate, possibly two entrances to the site and a high hill right by the road, so some investigation is required. I am reluctant to trespass on other people's property, so I would rather talk to some residents in the area first... Every time I am in the area I either have no time or it isn't an appropriate time to talk to anyone.
