Westbrook, Hennessy, Reid, Flieler, MacGregor, Golden Score Victories at Brighton Speedway on Rapid Rad and myFM 93.3 Night

By Clayton Johns

BRIGHTON, Ont. – August 6, 2016 – The Southern Ontario Sprints brought a thunderous storm back to Brighton Speedway on Rapid Rad and myFM 93.3 race night. A total 15 Sprint Cars and 67 stock cars were signed in to the pit area on a busy night of action at the Northumberland County oval.

Westbrook Scores Second Straight Southern Ontario Sprints Win

Oakland, Ont. native Dylan Westbrook (No.47x Bradshaw Fuels) stole the lead from his car owner Glenn Styres (No.0 Case IH) on lap 10 and never looked back to earn his second straight win with the Southern Ontario Sprints at Brighton Speedway.

The fourth-starting Westbrook quickly jumped to the front, but it was Styres leading the opening nine laps. Dain Naida (No.17x Townline Variety) took the second spot on lap two, but was quickly overtaken by Westbrook on lap five.

Two laps later, a scary incident occurred in turn three. Mitch Brown (No.10 Haldex Brakes) flipped wildy off the track after contact with Rick Wilson (No.42w Draper Doors) in a battle for the fourth position. Brown was uninjured, but understandably shaken.

On the following restart, the 17-year-old Westbrook got an impressive jump and built momentum in the top lane in order to take the lead from Styres out of turn four on the 10th lap. From there he survived Styres’ slide job attempt on a lap 17 restart and pulled away from Dain Naida by over two seconds at the checkered flag. Shawn Sliter (No.22 Giletta Flooring) rallied to a third-place finish.

Josh Hennessy Tops Canadian Modifieds For Second Win

Josh Hennessy (No.88 A&A Haulage) used the top lane to take the lead from Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) on lap 21 and locked down the bottom lane over the final four laps to earn his fourth win of the season. The victory came in the final round of the ABC Taxi Triple Crown.

Ferguson started outside the front row alongside polesitter Derek Bowers (No.03 Morton’s Crane Rental). Ferguson led the opening lap and paced the field through the only caution of the race on lap six when Shelby Mills (No.78 ABC Taxi) spun in turn two.

At the halfway point, Ferguson led Curtis King (No.07 Flowmetrix) and Hennessy. On lap 17, Hennessy took to the outside of King on lap 17 and completed the pass for second on lap 18. He maintained the top line and his momentum. It allowed him to track down Ferguson and lead lap 21 before clearing him on lap 22. He led the final five laps in all to take his second victory.

Andrew Hennessy (No.87 RJ Equipment Rentals) finished second after getting by Ferguson with two laps to go. The runner-up finish gave Andrew Hennessy the overall Triple Crown championship with a win and two second-place finishes in total.

Reid Earns First Career Pro Stock Win

Polesitter Leslie Mowat (No.2 Tri-County Plastics) led the opening lap of the Brighton Automotive Pro Stock feature, but it was the Austin Reid (No.85 Kids R Kool) show from there. Reid took over the lead on lap two and held off a tough cast of characters over 19 laps and six restarts to claim his first career victory in the division.

A caution on lap 10 led to four more restarts to complete that lap, the final of which came single-file. Reid paced the top-five each time and was trailed throughout by Brandon Murrell (No.19 Hannah Motors) and Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Bobcat Service).

The final restart came with just one lap to go after Mike Freeman (No.51 Boyer Chevrolet) and Rob Dier (No.7 Quinn Quest Renovations) tangled in turn two. Reid was perfect on the restart and left little doubt he would secure his first career win. Murrell and Anderson completed the podium.

Flieler Stumps French For Comp 4 Win

Adam Flieler (No.11 Double D Sports Bar & Grill) started third, but didn’t waste any time getting out front in the 15-lap Bill’s Johns Comp 4 A-Main. The Trenton, Ont. native led the opening lap after starting behind Keith Dunk (No.22) and Kevin Hertendy (No.7 Sine’s Flooring).

On lap 5, Flieler quickly had company as point leader Tyler French (No.0 Empey Tire) overtook Peter Moore (No.17 Sherry’s Pet Grooming) for second. The two drivers ran nose-to-tail until lap 13 when French tried the outside groove in a bid for the lead. Flieler was smooth around the bottom and won a drag race to the finish on the final lap. The victory was Flieler’s second this season. French took second ahead of his brother Josh French (No.08 Empey Tire), Peter Moore and Matthew Moore (Farl’s Auto Body).

MacGregor and Golden Take Stinger Features

In the 12-lap main event for the Quinte Septic Super Stinger division, veteran Del MacGregor (No.19 R Ward Construction) started sixth but didn’t stay there long. The Brighton native drove to second in time for a lap two restart and took over the point from polesitter Gary Taylor (No.89 International Truckload Services) from there. Taylor remained in contention until the very end and tapped the back bumper of MacGregor’s No.19 on the final lap, but couldn’t complete the pass. The win was MacGregor’s second this season.

It was a special victory for Brittany Golden (No.85 Rapid Rad) in the Junior Stinger division with her sponsor Rapid Rad in attendance. The Trenton pilot drove from the seventh starting position to the lead on lap seven, passing her cousin Chantel Golden in the process. The two drivers battled side-by-side for a couple of laps before Brittany took the lead for good with two laps to go and cruised to her second win of the season ahead of Chantel Golden (No.5 Rapid Rad) and Ken Evans (No.00 Cannifton Garage).
