WHITE STAYS CONSISTENT
The NASCAR Canadian Tire series visited Edmonton’s municipal airport this past weekend for the sixth stop of their 2008 schedule. The Rexall Grand Prix weekend drew over 130,000 fans and they definitely did not get let down. The competition was fierce as the hot and humid weather took its toll on drivers and equipment.
Sun Peaks British Columbia’s Jason White brought his Zimmer Wheaton Monte Carlo home in 15th place and kept his consistent string of finishing races alive. White gives most of the credit to his team, for their hard work and determined attitude to soldier on. “Racing at this level is extremely tough on crew members”, remarks White. “ It takes thousands of man hours to keep these hot rods running, and I have one of the best crews anywhere working together to keep the cars maintained “. The Rz Racing team has proven they can prepare equipment year after year. In 2005 Jason won the former Cascar west Rookie Of the Year title, while finishing every race and completing the most laps throughout the entire season.
The next two weeks are tough ones for the team, as they must now travel back to Montreal for the next road course race of the year. Road course racing is still a big learning curve for White but he seems to be up for the challenge. “Every time we go to the track we are gaining, and this is a positive thing”, said White. “ We just keep plugging away and learning as much as we can “.
Heading into Edmonton White was 45 points ahead of Alex Tagliani for the Rookie of the year title, but with Tagliani winning the race things have changed . Alex is a former Indy Car star who is very dominant on street circuits. Moving towards next weekends race at circuit Gilles Villenuve in Montreal, White is 45 points behind Alex Tagliani for the NASCAR freshman bragging rights. “With two of the next three races being road courses, it is very tough to beat Tag and take over the points race”, explained White. “ I just need to rely on my team and keep myself on the track and out of trouble, then look forward to the last five races of the season being on ovals where we are more equal”.
