Can Am midgets at Grand Bend
« on: June 22, 2007, 11:01:44 PM »
stopped at Grand Bend today and watched some of the can am midgets go around the track and talked to Rob Neely, he said he got around there in 11 seconds.

The Can Am midgets will be racing tomorrow at 6:00 pm along with 6.5 hp sprints, 9 hp sprints and 440's

Should be a good show stop by and see it.

I was there, having not seen a  can am midget race in several years very disappointing.  The race was follow the leader worse than the delaware late models.  In travelling through the pit area the can am drivers appeared to be very concerned about room and not being able to pass before their features.

I feel rather mislead about the track work, yes there is a new surface but it really doesn't seem to be that much bigger than the old one and it's got to be the smallest quarter mile I have ever seen.  I don't see enough room for a full size car race without an all out wreck fest.

The track is much bigger than before.  I'm not sure if you can still see where there is no grass in the infield from where the track used to be, but when you could see that, the new track looked much bigger than the old one.  Maybe not quite big enough for big cars, but the TQ midgets shouldn't have any problems with it.  Yesterday, Brad told me that they're probably going to try messing with the top groove to try and get some more grip up there.

Since they were able to get Super Modifieds around Nilestown 1/4 mile I dont see why they would have a problem with full size cars at GB .

Mike McColl was at one of the practice days at GB and he said that there shouldn't be any problem with having full-sized cars out there.  If you want to see a tight track, check out Varney.  I believe it's the same size as GB, but it's a lot narrower.  So if they can do it at Varney, GB should be fine.  I think even Flamboro and Sauble probably have tighter corners than GB.

Can they run? yeah can they put on a quality show so tight? probably if your an enduro enthusiast.  Will they be doing lots of repair work? Oh yeah.  Full size mods on there will touch alot of wheels and really twist stuff up.

LOL you maybe right shadow  but just to put it into perspective my uncle who was looking after me at the time was pissed that I spent much of the historic final Super mod race at Nilestown playing with toy cars in a pile of sand beside the grandstand . I think I was around 6 or 7  yrs old .

yes the race was boring but it was the first one on the new track but they should be able to get around it. they are the same width of the 440's and they have enough room but they don't have enough cars.

however the full size cars won't be able to get around because there would be no room for passing.

heh...well you got a couple years on me then. I was about that age when they shut the doors on the place. I probably pushed my toy cars around the same sandpile though!
