Centre For Speed Plays Host to 16th Annual Atlantic Stock Car Championships This Weekend

(Shediac, NB - October 2nd, 2015) - Stock car racing returns this weekend to the CENTRE For Speed in Shediac, New Brunswick as the 16th Annual Atlantic Championships takes centre stage. Drivers from all four Atlantic provinces plus the state of Maine will be represented over the seven different divisions racing on Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday, October 4th. Both dates will see the green flag drop on qualifying at 1pm.

A field of two dozen or more cars are expected to vie for the Atlantic Championships for Pro Stock on Sunday. The 200-lap feature will see many familiar names to local race fans, including Farmington, Maine’s Cassius Clark, who has won two major races in the region thus far in 2015 and two time, defending champion of the event Jonathan Hicken (Brudenell, PE). The field is chalk full of veterans like former event winner Greg Proude (Springvale, PE), Kevin Moore (Fredericton, NB), Shawn Pierce (Bridgewater, NS), Dylan Gosbee (Cornwall, PE) and Jason Carnahan (Stilesville, NB).

The race will also include fresh faces to the Pro Stock scene, including Braden Langille (Shubenacadie, NS) and Jarrett Butcher (Porter’s Lake, NS), both of whom will make their full bodied stock car debut Sunday. Butcher will drive a car out of his family’s Butcher Racing stable sponsored by Atlantic Tiltload, while Langille will pilot the car driven by Truro, Nova Scotia’s Dylan Blenkhorn. Sarah McKay (Quispamsis, NB) made her Pro Stock debut in this race in 2013 and will be a factor in the equation for the win before the checkered flag fall Sunday.

New Brunswick will also be represented in the Pro Stock feature by Dustin Tucker (Fredericton), John Rankin (St. Martin’s), Brady Creamer (Miramichi), Alexandra O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) and Robbie Fraser (Riverview). The pre-registration for the list sits at 24 drivers for the Pro Stock 200 and could grow prior to race time on Sunday.

Three Newfoundland drivers are also expected to compete in the Pro Stock feature, including Josh Collins (Placentia) and Conception Bay South’s Shannon Squires and Josh Weir. St. John’s Phil Fowler will be among those taking part in Saturday’s Sportsman 125 lap show.

Dave O’Blenis (Boundary Creek, NB) will be taking part in the Sportsman portion of the Atlantic Championships in 2015. A former winner of the event, O’Blenis will headline a field of stout competitors, including last year’s top three competitors as Racin’ Remi Gaudet (Shediac, NB), Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake, NS) and Collins will each look to take the Sportsman 125 home for their own. Laurie Cormier (Riverview, NB) enters this event as one of the hottest drivers in the division and will look to cap his season with another title at the CENTRE For Speed. Every major oval track in the region is represented in the field for the Sportsman feature on Saturday, which is expected to push well over 20 cars before the green flag flies at 1pm.

The Four Cylinder and Street Stock features on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, have received lots of interest heading into the weekend from fans and competitors alike. The Street Stock 100 drew 28 competitors from across the region in 2014 and the green flag could fly Sunday with over 30 cars in the field. Mark LeClair (Brackley, PE) won the race last year ahead of sisters Alexandra and Courtney O’Blenis (Boundary Creek, NB).

JR Lawson (Shubenacadie, NS) won a wild Mini Stock 100 last year over Tim Webster (Beaver Bank, NS). Both are expected to return, along with 2011 Atlantic Champion Dave Matthews (Kennetcook, NS) to compete against some of the best Honda and Volkswagen competitors in the Maritimes. “Mister Maritime Hustle” Matt Crocker (Fredericton, NB) was the Four Fun champion in 2014 and will return to defend his championship against some stiff competition from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

A 20-lap Bandolero feature will also be contested on Sunday while the Eastern Super Mini Cup Series will complete their 2015 season on Saturday in a 20-lap feature. Matt Watson (Summerside, PE) will look to complete a sweep of the Eastern Super Mini Cup Series season while therest will look to snap the champion’s streak.
