PETTY RACEWAY TO HOST “SMASHING” GOOD TIME SATURDAY NIGHT
(Wednesday, July 8th - RIVER GLADE, NEW BRUNSWICK) - Petty International Raceway in River Glade, New Brunswick is in for a night of “smashing firsts” on Saturday night, July 11th at 6pm. While the track will host competition in four thrilling stock car classes on Saturday night, including the Leisure Days RV Bandoleros, Mister Transmission Mini Stocks, CMax Street Stocks and Sportsman, the action will not stop there. Petty International Raceway will host their first Powder Puff/Women on Wheels Event along with a $1,000 to win Demolition Derby to close off the motorsports show.
Since the inaugural Petty International Raceway Demolition Derby was announced during the winter months, interest amongst competitors has been strong from across the region. Multiple entries from as far as Halifax, Nova Scotia and all the way up to the Northern Shore of New Brunswick have signaled intention to tow to River Glade with the intention of taking the $1,000 top prize home.
Included in the expected entries for Saturday night is current Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour point leader Dylan Blenkhorn of Truro, Nova Scotia. Blenkhorn is the 2012 champion of the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Derby and will look to add a second major demolition title to his already impressive motorsports resume.
Fans will also be treated to a Powder Puff/Women on Wheels race prior to the Demolition Derby. The female entrants in this event have no prior racing experience and these rookies will be on track for a 15-lap exhibition race to determine female supremacy at Petty International Raceway.
In stock car action, Ashton Tucker (Lyttleton) holds the top spot in the standings in the popular Leisure Days RV Bandolero division after three races. Tucker will be back at the wheel of his #32 after Adam Meehan (Rawdon Gold Mines, NS) drove the car to victory lane for the team on June 27th. “The Flying Frenchman” Michael Cormier (Grand Barachois) sits second in the standings, just four points behind Tucker and one point up on reigning Rookie of the Year Levi Rossiter (Salisbury).
Mike Weagle (Salisbury) vaulted to the point lead after the third race of the year for the Mister Transmission Mini Stock. Weagle finished in the top three on June 27th to winner J.R. Lawson (Shubenacadie, NS), who has won the last two Mister Transmission Mini Stock races at Petty International Raceway. Multiple time Nova Scotia Four Cylinder champion Tim Webster (Beaverbank, NS) and Rob Poirier (Irishtown) chase Weagle in the Mister Transmission Mini Stock championship standings heading into Saturday night.
Ken Mackenzie Jr. (Salisbury) also holds a hot hand heading into competition Saturday for the CMax Street Stock class. Like Lawson in the Mister Transmission Mini Stocks, Mackenzie has won the last two races and has a slim four point lead over Gary Tingley (River Glade) and a seven point advantage over the #48 car, which has been split by Courtney O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) and Ronnie Lane (Salisbury) in the first three races of the season. The most recent race for the division saw the debut in the class of former Mister Transmission Mini Stock point leader Mike Edwards (Penobsquis) and former Sportsman competitor “The Thrill Maker” Craig Ward and the division is expected to continue to grow throughout the year.
The Late Model Sportsman division will see its second race of the season on Saturday. With their first race being on May 16th, you better believe the cars and stars of the popular division are chomping at the bit to hit the track once again. Luc Bourgeois (Memramcook) outran teenagers Alexandra O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) and Ken Mackenzie Jr (Salisbury) in that first race in May, and with a stout field of Sportsman talent expected at the track Saturday night, Bourgeois will have to be on his game once more to keep his point lead.
Pit gates for competitors participating in the Saturday, July 11th event open at 2:30pm. Grandstand gates for spectators open at 4pm with racing getting underway at 6pm. Adult admission to the grandstands is $20, youth admission (ages eight to 18) is $10 while children seven and under are admitted free of charge. Pit admission is $25. Tickets can be purchased at the gate on race day.
