Stewart Friesen captures Super DIRTcar Series race at Cornwall Motor Speedway

Cornwall, Ont – Sunday, June 26, 2016 – Martin Bélanger – Cornwall Motor Speedway had one of his biggest event of the season as the Super DIRTcar Big-Blocks Series was in town of their annual trek at the speedway with a 100-lap race. A complete race program was also on tap as the Pro-Stock had the night off. Mel Valade Backhoe Services was the main sponsor of the evening.

Max McLaughlin and Stewart Friesen were on the starting row of the 100-lap Super DIRTcar Big Block feature. Friesen took the early lead over McLaughlin and Matt Sheppard. While Friesen pulled away, Sheppard was on the backbumper of McLaughlin with the first 10 laps went down quickly. Friesen was in heavy traffic with 15 laps in the books with Sheppard right with him. Friesen had a good car on the top with Sheppard and Brett Hearn joining the mix with 30 laps completed. The leader went quickly into lap traffic with 60 laps to go. Gage Morin went out of the speedway in turn 1 and yellow was out on lap 45.

At the halfway point, Friesen was your leader with Sheppard and Danny Johnson making his way into the top 3. Caution was out on lap 59 for Ryan Arbuthnot. Another great start for Friesen as Chris Raabe was now running in the top 5 running a 358 engine. The yellow was out on lap 69. Friesen still in the lead as the top 5 remained unchanged at the restart. The last 10 laps were quite entertaining as Matt Sheppard took the lead on lap 93 but a lap came into factor as Sheppard took back the lead with 3 laps to go. Friesen went on to win the event over Sheppard and Danny Johnson completed the top 3.

The last feature of the evening was the 25-lap Tracy Wheeler Sportsman feature as David Andre was the early leader. A lap 2 caution was good for Tristan Draper as he had a good start and passed Andre with Justin Lalancette in third. Draper still in the lead with Lalancette moving up to second. Draper was running a solid race but went too high in turn 2 and lost valuable ground giving the lead to Thomas Cook with only 6 laps to go. Shane Pecore was now in the mix and was strong using the inside lane and took the lead on the final lap and went on to win his second feature of the season.

Francis Blanchette took the early lead in the Polar Sound DJ Services Mini-Stock feature as Bob Ray was able to take the lead from Blanchette on lap 4 as a flat tire brought the caution at halfway point for the race leader Ray had a flat tire. Blanchette was back in the lead but slowed down with 4 to go as Alexis Charbonneau was the leader with Ray making a return in the lead pack. Charbonneau led the final laps to capture his first feature at Cornwall.
Dudes Thompson led all 15 laps in the Polar Sound DJ Services feature race as only Junior Delormier came close at the end of the feature. Thompson captures his second feature of the season.

Next week, the Go Nuclear Late Model Series will be in town along with the always popular autograph night! A full program is scheduled with the Novice Sportsman having a night off.
