I heard that JR is testing a truck at Iowa on Sept 23rd 24th with TEAM TRG...I heard it from the NCATS TSN broadcast.

Someone's bringing money on that deal, given how TRG seems to work in the truck series.

Not a rumour anymore...

Young Canadian Stock Car Star J.R. Fitzpatrick Off to NASCAR with TRG Motorsports

The 2006 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Champion, John Ryan (J.R.) Fitzpatrick is about to take the biggest step in his racing career by making the move from his native Canada to the United States’ and testing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Fitzpatrick, who is the 2006 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Champion and the Series’ youngest Champion of all-time, will unite with race winning TRG Motorsports for a two-day test at Iowa Speedway in an arrangement formulated by motorsports marketing executive Jason Sharpe.

Sharpe and Fitzpatrick reached out to several teams and after careful consideration, an agreement was struck with TRG Motorsports that will see the 20-year-old Cambridge, Ontario native behind the wheel of a TRG Motorsports’ factory supported Chevrolet Silverado for the two-day test on September 23rd and 24th. Fitzpatrick’s progress over the two day test will be monitored by TRG Motorsports Team Principal Kevin Buckler and Daytona 500 winning Crew Chief Butch Hylton.

"We are really excited about aligning ourselves with another talented driver like J.R. Fitzpatrick," said Team Principal, Kevin Buckler. "We’re even more excited to be shaping the career of a young star like J.R. He has already proven that he has the talent to be a winner in CASCAR and we believe that it’s only a matter of time before he is winning in the ranks of NASCAR in the United States."

The main reason this testing arrangement has been able to come together so quickly is enthusiasm of all parties involved at the prospect of working together. "This is a fantastic opportunity," said Fitzpatrick. "Even before I got my drivers license I have wanted to race cars and to have the chance to work with a successful team like TRG Motorsports with Kevin Buckler and Butch Hylton is very special," he said. "Working with this team gives me the chance to learn in so many different areas. That knowledge will help me take the next step in my NASCAR career."

J.R. Fitzpatrick is the youngest ever national stock car racing champion in Canada having claimed the CASCAR Super Series title in 2006 at age eighteen. J.R. currently races in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, Canada’s highest profile championship, featuring events from coast to coast on oval tracks, road courses and temporary street circuits. Last season Fitzpatrick claimed two victories, and three pole positions in only 12 events. This year he has added another victory to his total.

I hope that J.R. has a happier experience with TRG than the TRG/Donny Lia story. Lia won a race earlier in the year with them but is gone now.

This is an excerpt from a NASCAR.com article on the New Hamsphire weekend.

"As for TRG Motorsports, rookie Andy Lally drove the 71 truck to a 20th-place finish last week at Gateway. But the first-year Truck team has decided to sidleline the No. 71, marking the first week the truck, which is 18th in owner points, will not race this year.

"We have decided to take the high road and not make any public comment on the issues surrounding Donny Lia's departure from TRG Motorsports," team principal Kevin Buckler said. "We have made a smart business decision by sidelining the No. 71 at New Hampshire this weekend and are currently in negotiations with other funded drivers who are available to take over that ride as soon as Las Vegas Motor Speedway next week."

Buckler made the decision late Tuesday night. "We were looking at all of our options and felt it would be best for us to focus all of our efforts on one truck this weekend while we work out the details that surround the No. 71 and the races that truck will run the rest of the year. All of our equipment right now is really top-notch and we already have drivers and sponsors lined up for Martinsville and Texas, and it's only a matter of time before we fill that seat for the remaining races."

TRG Motorsports made its splash into the Craftsman Truck Series by winning in only its seventh start and has multiple top-10 finishes.

"We have some of the best equipment out there and everyone in the Truck Series is aware of that," Buckler said. "With help from Chevrolet, we have forged an alliance with Kevin Harvick Inc. We also have one of the best engine builders in the business in Pro Motor Engineering.

"We have proven that we have what it takes to be competitive in this cutthroat business and we have built a solid foundation for this team from the ground up with top-level people. We've had one of the fastest trucks on the track in the last six races and that just goes to show that our equipment can run at the front. We plan to be in this series for years to come and although the decision not to race at New Hampshire was a hard one, it was the decision that we had to make."

T.J. Bell will drive the No. 7 TRG Chevrolet at NHMS. He has two top-10 finishes in seven races this season."
