Sommerville Captures Race Rankin Captures Series

Sunday’s final leg of the Maritime Sportsman Series at Centre for Speed was an excitement fulled event with 17 Super Sportsmen taking the green flag in the 100 lap feature.   In the early going, John Rankin took the lead and for a short while, it looked like he was going to run away from everybody. However, slowly but surely, the #11 machine of Cal Hatfield chased him down and took over the lead on lap 38.   At lap 56 however it was the wiley veteran, Bill Sommerville's turn to  assumed the lead and despite the best efforts of several competitors, Sommerville hung on for his first ever 100 lap win in Shediac in a car built and sponsored by his son Lonnie.

Calvin Rankin, whho had won the first two legs of this series, methodically worked his way through the pack from 9th position to capture second place at the end of the day.   It was good enough for Rankin to clinch the overall Maritime Super Series Championship title for 2011. Cousin John (Rankin) fought back to claim third place after falling back as far as ninth on the day.  Earlier, John Rankin, Luc Bourgeois, and Cal Hatfield captured wins in the qualifying heats while Bert Cormier came home victorious in the last chance qualifier.  Bourgeois still leads the weekly racing points title race by a slim margin after entering the event ahead of Bert Cormier by just one (1) point.

In Ministock action, Scott Bourque came home with victories in the Ministock Heat and Semi, while Julien LeBlanc captured the Feature. In “Four Fun” action, Justin MacDonald recorded a “Grand Slam”, winning all three events.

James “Cooter” Smith continued his winning ways in the Shediac Sportsman (Street Stock) class, capturing the Heat and the Feature. Rookie competitor Martin Landry captured victory in the Shediac Sportsman Semi and was a force to be reckoned with in both the Heat and feature, until mechanical problems forced him to the sidelines in the Feature. After the race, Smith stated that Landry would have won, if not for the mechanical issues. Rick cashol, a regulkar at Speedway 660, made the trip to CFS for this weekend and grabbed second in the Feature while Don Marcoux came home third in the 50 lap event.

Next week at the Centre, there is regular POGO points Championship racing in the “Four Fun”, Ministock, and Shediac Sportsman classes. The Super Sportsmen are off next weekend and return to action on August 14th.   The feature event this weekend will be a 75 lap inivtational for 4 Cylinder cars plus a Shediac Sportsman 35.  It will also be "Community Day" for all families with Postal Code E4R through E4Z meaning every family in that postal code receives free entry into the event.
