Black Flags Fly in Shediac as Bourque scores “Grand Slam”

Sunday August 7th (Grand Barachois, NB)  -  Despite deteriorating weather throughout the day including a minor rain delay it was an exciting day of racing featuring local and visiting drivers during the POGO Inivtational 50's here at the CENTRE for Speed.

Scott Bourque of Cap Pele, piloted his 69 Ministock to a “Grand Slam” in the MiniStock division edging out Josh Simon (#71) of Boucthouche at the finish line by less than a 12" margin to capture a perfect day.  Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane picked up seconds in the Heat and Semi and a third in the Feature. Simon also had a strong day, picking up thirds in the Heat and semi, coupled with a second in the Feature.

Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville, NB returned to success on Sunday as well as he piloted his Chevy to wins in the Heat and Semi in the Four Fun Division before a collision in the Feature 50 lap with his arch rival from Springhill, Justin MacDonald (#7) put him on the sidelines for the rest of the day.  The two top competitors in the division have had a running fued since the beginning of the season.  MacDonald and Hall were awarded with a  Black Flag for the altercation and retaliation that followed and their day was ended early.  Dave Matthews (#99) of Halifax had a great day winning the feature and picking up a second in the Heat, and a third in the Semi.  Macdonald (#7) picked up a third in the Heat and a Second in the Semi , while Cody Bourque (#6) of Grand Barachois almost won the feature but was edged out by Matthews.  Bourque grabbed second in the Feature. Jeremy Hallett (#73), another Halifax regular, picked up a third in the Feature to round out the placings.

In Sportsman action, Don Marcoux (#27) of Saint Marie picked up wins in the Heat and Semi and added a second in the Feature, for another fine performance. Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois also had a good day, picking up seconds in the Heat and Semi, but a naging mechanical problem continued to hinder Landry's quest for a feature win forcing him to retire midway through the final race. Cape Bretoner, Mike MacLeod (#17), however put on a great performance to claim victory in the final event of the day for the division starting on the pole and leading for most of the event.

The Sportsman had originally been scheduled for a day off this weekend, but requests from a couple of drivers got them added to the schedule mid week. Unfortunately, two big Sportsman events on Saturday evening, left several cars unable to compete and as a result, only three Sportsman were able to compete. What they lacked in numbers though, they made up for, in great competition. Robert Raynes picked up the win in the Heat, along with a third in the Feature. Bert Cormier captured victory in the Feature, to go with a second in the Heat, while Craig Ward picked up a third and a second for his efforts.

One of the highlights of the day was the “Kids Hotshoe” race. The biggest cheers went out to the youngest competitor, a little girl around two, who completed half the race distance of one lap. Over fifty youngsters from throughout the region took part in the event.

At the completion of racing, fans were treated to a burnout display by Josh Gaudet of Shediac and Kirk Mullane of Halifax.  Both left the fans cheering for more.

Next week, the Open Wheel Modified Tour invades the Centre for the third time this season, and the action promises to be “hot and heavy”. Buyer Flyer Points Championship racing in all divisions is also on the schedule.  It is also a speedway “Community Day” for families from Postal Codes E5A through E5Z who receive free entry just by showing thier valid address via a drivers license.
See you at the CENTRE!
