Cayuga ASA/OSCAAR Results June 30
« on: July 01, 2007, 12:14:36 AM »
Charlie Menard of Wisconsin won the ASA Challenge Series 200 lap feature ahead of Eddie Hoffman of Illinois, Michael Annett of Iowa, Travis Dassow of Wisconsin (last car on the lead lap) and Keeton Hanks of Kentucky rounding out the top 5.  Pete Vanderwyst of St. Thomas was 7th (1 lap down) with Rob MacDonnell of Allenford 18th (DNF).

Last 100 laps after the halfway break went caution free and Menard was never challenged after taking the lead on lap 126. 24 ASA cars on hand with 23 starting the race.

Pole speed for the ASA crate engine cars was 20.078 second. How does that compare to the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series pole speed in May?

Derrick Tiemersma won the Don Biederman Memorial 75 lap OSCAAR feature over a fast closing Al Shepstone at the finish, after many of the earlier leaders were sidelined with mechanical trouble. I believe there were 21-22 OSCAAR cars on hand.

Junior Hanley paced the field for the OSCAAR race driving Biederman's #43!

Pretty good crowd on hand considering the ticket price.  Wish they would repair the lap counter/scoreboard.

Yep, not a bad night at Cayuga.

Only thing I want to know is how Menard, after spinning to bring out the caution, ends up re-starting in 5th (or so) spot.  Maybe the announcer explained it, but we didn't hear it. Good job by Vanderwyst, putting on a pretty good duel with the 8 (Dale Jr. lookalike) car, and later getting up to 4th off a really good restart. Its only too bad that Butch Miller wasn't much of a factor for the evening.

Nice to see Rob Clarke looking good in his SLM...pretty good race by the OSCAAR gang, though Clarke fell off a little at the end, and #61 looking like he was gonna dust everyone before dropping off and pulling it behind the wall.

Heck, I was just tickled to experience Cayuga at night again. Been there lots of times over the years, but the last time I was there under the lights, Earl Ross was still driving the Coke Can car, Bieder had that beat up blue Nova, the Compacts were a feature division, and there was a little oval for mini stocks where pit road now is. (and "The Fonz" was the coolest guy on prime time TV!)

Wanna shout out to DB1 and Bill. Fun hanging with you guys!

And they had the autograph session on the track where it belongs !!! (I find it makes a huge difference when you can sorta put a face to the car)

I was puzzled by Menard's starting position too. He looped it coming out of turn 4 (with most of the field close behind), and they threw the caution immediately. The pace car picked-up the field, then took them down pit road for the mid-way competition caution. As Shadowracer said, on the restart, he was lined-up somewhere around 5th...

Possibly when they were brought down pit lane by the pace car and had their mandatory break, the pit crews also had a say in processing the cars and this is how Menard moved up.Noticed Vanderweyst started 5th and had been running 7th before the break.
All this would have been clarified if the speaker system was working properly...and of course the scoring tower not working.
"COME ON" Cayuga people, you are charging absolute top dollar for your shows, you have to put something back into the track. Yes, the seats were nicely painted, but the fans need to know whats happening on the track.
Hey SHADOWRACER, it was great SEEING you too.

It sounds like it was a decent show, one that I would have enjoyed seeing, but this fan WILL NOT be there as long as the new management of Cayuga Speedway continues to GOUGE at the gate. The season ticket was never an option of any real use for me as there aren't enough events of interest to me on their schedule to make it viable especially when my 250 mile round trip is added in. They had best take another look at their pricing. It's waaaaay out of line.
I will happilly pay $50 for an entire Saturday at Toronto Motorsports Park, and the cost of getting there and back, for the IHRA AC/Delco Canadian Nationals (because I greatly enjoy drag racing as well as roundy-round) because there is no doubt that you get your money's worth with hundreds of race cars of various descriptions, open pits and a show that goes from morning until after dark complete with the always fun "Night of Fire" finale. Oh, and an extra $5 will get you a reserved seat.
$45 for qualifying and two features with 50 cars total is a ripoff plain and simple. It's the last thing Ontario stock car racing needs, a gouging promoter. A pox on them!!
Btw, D.J. Kennington won the Cayuga pole in May with a 20.78. Not quite as quick as the ASA LM's, but faster than the best Cascar pole time that I can recall which was 21.06. What kind of times were the Oscaar guys pulling?

Yeah, I thought it was a pretty good night at Cayuga also. Decent car counts and a decent crowd. I thought that the crowd would be better for a double header like this even with the ticket prices. I was also curious as to why the #15 was given his position back. I thought that maybe the ASA had a rule in place where they revert to last lap when a car is spun and the car that was spun got his position back and the offender is sent to the back. But when the #5 was sent to the back for spinning the #11?, I don't recall the #11 regaining his spot. Adjust the ticket prices and build on shows like this and Cayuga can be successful again.
Would have loved to see Hanley racing instead of pacing.

Also, the gauntlet race needs a bit of work I think. Looked like 5 mini stocks trying to stopp a big van...all without actually hurting the equipment!
