And so it has begun! Campbellford Chrysler and Coca Cola helped kick off the 2010 race season at Brighton Speedway last night with a total of 73 registered drivers in four divisions of racing.  The fans were well pleased to see the new cars, facility improvements, $1 hot dogs all night and the opportunity to get back to racing.

With a chilly afternoon behind us, the night warmed up with exciting racing when the green flag dropped on a field of 22 Comp 4 cars sponsored by Bill's Johns. This race went off without complication as it went green to checker when the 2010 Best Appearing Car #02 Leslie Turcotte Mowat was able to secure her first checkered flag in two years.  Her delight was equally matched by Greg Dabor, Sales Manager of Campbellford Chrysler as he presented the trophy in victory lane.

Race 1 of the Duel in the Dirt Big 6 Brighton Automotive Pro Stock event saw a field of 23 cars battling to the finish line.  In a special 40 lap feature the reining Pro Stock Champion #91 Kraig Handley valiantly fought to keep up with the #72 Doug Anderson "Big Smooth" Anderson for the 40 laps.  About half way Anderson over took Handley and didn’t look back for the rest of the race.  A great run by the #55 Jamie Marshall had him pass Handley in the closing laps for second place as the top three battled through lapped traffic.

The tacky smooth track conditions made for an great race in the Bainer's Radiators Canadian Modified Division. With a decent field of great looking car for 2010 the top spot was up for grabs between the #4 Shawn Gregory and the #11 Dan Ferguson.  Ferguson hung tight to Gregory’s rear bumper until one lap left in the race when Ferguson was able to make his way underneath Gregory with a clean pass going into turn one and capture the feature win.  Wally Alderdice returned to competition in the Canadian Modified after many years away from the track and picked up the best appearing with his number 84 Canadian Modifieds.

The night also included the 2010 debut of the Quinte Towing Stingers with Mike Fletcher picking up where his brother Andy the 2009 champion left off with the feature win.  The Comp 4 Mechanics was won on a last lap pass by Rick Sopaz of Carrying Place driving his sons #12 Comp 4 Accord.  Fans were treated to a sneak peak of next week when with hot laps by the new DIRTcar Pro Late Model Division sponsored by Vanderlaan Building Products and the number 11 local favorite Sprint Car Chris Jones.  With both Jones and the Late Models doing three sessions of hot laps, drivers were able to test out their new rides on the new racing surface.

Fans were glued to their seats with great expectations fueled by a long winter of no racing.  Full of Dollar Dogs the most dedicated fans in dirt track racing enjoyed a great night of action and excitement to kick off the 2010 season that only promises to get better next week.  Fans, drivers and staff alike are looking forward as Rock 107 and Vanzuylen Tire and Alignment present the Southern Ontario Spint Cars plus the debut of the DIRTcar Pro Late Models.  Don't miss the action, May 22nd as the SOS Sprints and Late Models join the Bainer's Radiators Canadian Modifieds, Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks and the Bill's Johns Comp 4.  As a backup plan management has decided to advertise the only scheduled rain date for 2010, Sunday, May 23rd at 6:00 pm if Mother Nature decides not to cooperate.  Be sure to check the web site at brightonspeedway.com for the most up to date information or call 866-681-1102 for more details.
