EXCAVATOR OLYMPICS “STEEL” THE SHOW

The Dekeyser Excavating  introduction of the Excavator Olympics had the fans cheering as they crushed, snapped, spun and flung beat up vans all over the infield at Brighton Speedway on July 11, 2009.  This first time competition included three contests pitting two excavators against each other to determine the longest throw, the closest car to the pin and a freestyle champion.   With Ed and Derek Dekeyser at the helm, both showed their skill with the arms, their control over their buckets, and their willingness to take a risk in the name of fun.  Although Derek was determined as the fan’s favourite, the real winners following this display of mechanical power were the two charities that drivers collected money for, the Brighton Speedway Chase for the Cancer Cure and Quinte Access.

“When the idea first came up we were unsure how it would look, or what the Dekeysers and their machines were capable of, but we knew it was an innovative idea and that the crowd could get into it.  As a family entertainment hot spot we really thought this was something all ages would enjoy.  It was great to have the fans, drivers, staff and management all share in the antics of these traditional construction vehicles, and have the charities benefit from the show,” said Mark Rinaldi, Track Promoter.

Also exciting for the fans was the return of the Holiday Inn Southern Ontario Sprints, including local favourite Rick Wilson,  the Joyceville Jet, and his two children April and Kyle.  Although Rick gave it all he had, he took second to Adam West, following a final lap dash to the finish caused by April spinning out.

Other track winners include Bob Green, #26 in the Picture This Pure Stocks, Charlie Sandercock, #57 in the Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified and  Doug Anderson #72 in the Brighton Automotive Pro Stock Division.  A first time Victory Lane visit was celebrated by Oliver Webb, #4, in the Quinte Towing Stingers.

Celebrations will continue again on July 18th, when Brighton Speedway celebrates Christmas in July, during the Free Flow Petroleum Salute to our 911 Heroes, featuring the FAB FOUR and Eastern Stock Car Challenge.  All Police, Fire Fighters & Paramedics will be admitted for free with ID, or Uniform.  Green Flag flies at 7pm.  For more information on this and other events please visit www.brightonspeedway.com
