Zimbardi, McPherson, Hess, and Hils Visit Ohsweken Victory Lane

by Tommy Goudge (June 6, 2008), Ohsweken, Ontario –
It was a hot night at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night, and hotly contested feature races were the order of the evening.  Jared Zimbardi, Cody McPherson, Chase Hess, and Chris Hils emerged from very warm cockpits to have their photos taken in Engine Pro Racing/Melling Performance Pumps/Ferrara Valves Victory Lane on Lone Wolf Pit Stop night at the Speedway.

24 cars were in the pits for round 4 of Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car action.  The track surface was very fast early in the evening, as Ryan Hunsinger proved in heat race action when he turned a lap of 13.428 seconds on his way to victory in heat race #1.  The time is just 0.051 seconds off Kenny Jacobs’ 3 year old 360 sprint car track record.  Kevin Job and Kris Root led the field to the green flag in the 20 lap feature, with Job getting the early lead, but point leader Jared Zimbardi and 2nd place point man Keith Dempster quickly made their way into the top 3 as well.  An early caution for debris on the front stretch slowed the race briefly, and then it was back to green flag racing for the duration, with Job again asserting his lead out front, but Zimbardi and Dempster kept the leader in sight.  Lapped traffic became a factor as the 3 front-runners darted and weaved their way through, while Zimbardi and Dempster were able to close on Job’s #21x in the process.  For the 3rd week in a row, the lead changed hands with less than 5 laps left in the feature as Zimbardi got underneath Job in turns 1 & 2 with less than 2 laps to go, and held on for the win.  Job persevered to come home 2nd despite a broken shock absorber, while Dempster settled for 3rd, followed by Kyle Patrick, and Rob Pietz with a 3rd top 5 finish in 4 races.  Heat race wins went to Hunsinger, Fred Cade, and Pietz.

Another solid field of 19 ESSO Thunder Stocks were on hand for their 4th race of the season at Ohsweken, including new additions Dave Bailey, Colin Court, and Mike Ward.  Brian Pescetti and Mark Saul led the field to the green flag, but it wasn’t long before Cody McPherson, Vince Fargnoli, and Glen Leinen arrived in the top 5 after starting 11th, 10th, and 9th respectively.  In what might have been the most entertaining feature of the young Ohsweken season in any division, the top 6 and sometimes 7 cars ran much of the feature side by side, with Pescetti leading most of the way, but always fighting off the challenges of Fargnoli and McPherson.  The pack freight-trained by Pescetti late in the race and his #62 then made hard contact with the outside wall on the backstretch, but was still able to come home in 5th.  McPherson broke free and came home with the feature win, followed by Fargnoli, who edged Leinen for 2nd at the line, while Ryan Dinning and Pescetti rounded out the top 5.  Heat race wins went to Brad Bacher and Glen Leinen.

In ESSO Mini-Stock action, a first time winner graced victory lane as young Chase Hess swept the night, winning both his heat race and the 15 lap feature.  Hess started on the outside of the front row and was never seriously challenged, but there was plenty of side by side action behind him as Rick Emberson fought his way from the 14th starting position to finish 2nd.  Mark Thorne, Kevin Hilborn, and Jim Swing rounded out the top 5.  Point leader Abel Castelein turned in another consistent run, finishing in 6th.  Heat race victories went to Hess, Dan Stewart, and Brent Hill.

The Fun Stocks were back for their 4th race of the year, with yet another new face in victory lane as young Chris Hils passed Lee Hils late in the non-stop 25 lap affair to take the victory.  Newcomer Kacey Huffman signed in for action, but never made it onto the track on Friday.

Friday Night Thunder resumes next Friday, June 13 when Awesome Racewear presents another action packed 4-division event featuring the Corr/Pak Winged Sprints, ESSO Thunderstocks, ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Fun Stocks.  Friday Night Thunder at Ohsweken is affordable family entertainment just a short drive away from most mid-western Ontario locations.
