NASCAR has issued penalties, fines and suspensions to the car No. 1 team

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 8, 2008) – NASCAR has issued penalties, fines and suspensions to the car No. 1 team that competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rules infractions found last week at Daytona International Speedway.

The car driven by Martin Truex Jr., was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-3.8A (roof of the car does not conform to the specifications) of the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rule book.

As a result, Truex Jr. and car owner Teresa Earnhardt have been penalized 150 championship driver and 150 championship owner points, respectively. Both the crew chief, Kevin Manion, and the car chief, Gary Putnam, have been suspended from the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events, suspended from NASCAR until Aug. 27 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Additionally, Manion has been fined $100,000.

The infractions were discovered July 3 during opening day inspection.

I guess we can say this might end his chance to make the chase.

That's tough to overcome, but it's not impossible considering there's 8 races left and how the guys 10th-15th have run the past few weeks.

I don't see Truex coming back into the chase this year. If he does I will be amazed. They have a lot of things to rally around like getting a different crew chief and a car chief in there for the next 6 races. They will need somebody that can fit in immediately and work the chemistry properly, otherwise he will slip further back!

That doesn't suspend the car/crew chiefs from the shop, so it's not as big of a hole as it could be.

I know it is not as big a deal as you would think. But the car and crew chiefs do their jobs at the track and have a certain way of doing things. Everyone is different and kames decisions based on there ways of strategy. It may be a good thing and Truex may run better, but all I am saying is the odds are against him having to bring 2 new guys to the track on the weekend for 6 weeks. I know the new guys will still be in contact with the suspended members. But not being there may not be the same as they are not allowed at the track while serving the suspensions!
