Nothing is inherently wrong about this current board, however it has been having some problems... Namely it almost cut off from the server because it's using up too much processing power. We talked a bit about it over here before entertaining the idea of switching over to different software:
http://www.canadianracingonline.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=5660&postdays=0&postorder=ascHaving a Vbulletin software or similar board in place for the 2007 season will hopefully take away the strain on the servers. Some members including myself have been pushing to have posts stay on the boards longer than they currently do, which can't be done with the resources the board currently uses.
A VBulletin is also a bit more "mainstream", meaning the majority of message boards run on that software. This will hopefully make some people more comfortable to register and participate. VBulletin software also allows for "user specific messages", so for example, an unregistered user would see a message at the top of the boards encouraging them to register and participate in discussion instead of just watching from the sidelines, thus growing the site’s community base.
There are a host of other stability advantages associated with Vbuletin software as well.
