McCreadie Masters Ohsweken for "Six Nations 50" Victory

by Tommy Goudge (June 20, 2008) –
The inaugural visit to Ontario and to Ohsweken Speedway by the World of Outlaws Late Model series was postponed a day due to rain, but it was well worth the wait.  The delay was especially worth it for Tim McCreadie of Watertown, NY who took home a custom-made glass trophy and over $10,000 for winning the first “Six Nations 50” presented by Arrow Express at Ohsweken.  The rescheduled Late Model event added to an already stellar Friday Night Thunder card presented by Gale’s Auto Aftermarket, featuring the Empire Super Sprints tour, and Ohsweken’s ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Friday Night Fun Stocks, which made for a total of 130 drivers from 11 different states and provinces in the pits.

Ricky Elliott of Delaware and Shane Clanton of Georgia led the field to the green flag to start the “Six Nations 50”, with Clanton getting the early jump and leading the first 19 laps, but McCreadie quickly advanced to 2nd and began stalking Clanton’s #25.  After a caution on the 14th lap that bunched the field, McCreadie went back to work on Clanton when the green flag flew again, and made his move for the lead on lap 19. 3 caution flags slowed the field during the 20th lap, but on each restart McCreadie pulled away, and did the same after the final caution flew on lap 33, leaving Clanton to battle with Rick Eckert, who had moved up from his 11th starting spot.  Clanton worked the top groove to perfection while Eckert repeatedly tried to get by on the low side for much of the last half of the race.  Eckert’s #24 drew even with Clanton a number of times in the corners, but Clanton’s momentum coming out of the corners kept him ahead of Eckert for the entire distance.  Tim Fuller ran just a few car lengths behind Clanton and Eckert, waiting for a mistake from the 2 competitors, but each ran nearly flawless races despite running door to door in close quarters for much of the race.  When the checkered flag flew, McCreadie was followed to the line by Clanton, Eckert, Fuller, and Darrell Lanigan, who advanced from 13th to finish 5th, and take over the series point lead from Steve Francis, who struggled to find the handle, eventually coming home 14th, 1 lap down.

Heat race victories went to Clint Smith - who also ran the fastest lap in time trials at 16.094 seconds - Elliott, Francis, and Clanton, while B-Main victories went to Chub Frank and Dan Stone.  Local drivers Chris Ross of Wallaceburg and Adam Ferri of Port Colborne turned some heads as Ross came home with a fine 12th place feature finish – the best finish of any Ontario driver – while Ferri fought back from a broken oil pump belt in his heat race to qualify through his B-Main and finish 16th in the feature.

A good crowd was on hand to witness the inaugural visit by the World of Outlaws Late Model series to Ohsweken, including many who took advantage of the Pit Pass Upgrade and got a unique vantage point from the backstretch stands, and many others who enjoyed the view from the brand new and hugely expanded frontstretch grandstands.  The event was deemed a success by all involved, and Ohsweken and WoO officials have already committed to holding the second annual “Six Nations 50” next season.

In Empire Super Sprints action, a familiar face was in victory lane at Ohsweken as 2-time and defending Canadian Sprint Car Nationals champion Steve Poirier of Saint-Matheiu-de-Beloeil, Quebec took the ESS feature win, and round #3 of the ESS Canadian Invasion mini-series.  Bobby Breen and Michael Parent led the field to the green flag to start the 25 lap feature, with Parent taking the early lead, but 3rd starter Jeff Cook kept the leaders in sight.  Poirier started 14th on the grid, but had no intentions of staying there, and quickly began to slice his way through the field as many of his competitors fought for grip on the slick surface.  Cook was able to get by Parent during the 10th lap, but Poirier was already in the top 5 by that time, and drove under Cook for a lead he would not relinquish just 5 laps later.  Meanwhile, 12th place starting Lance Yonge found the fast way around in the bottom groove and began a charge to the front of his own, but ran out of time to catch Poirier before the checkered flag fell.  Following Poirier and Yonge across the stripe were Justin Barger, Cook, and Ohsweken Speedway Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division points leader Jared Zimbardi in 5th.

Heat race victories went to Parent, Bobby Breen, Cook, and Barger, while Blake Breen and Alain Bergeron took wins in the 2 B-Mains, and Barger won the dash for cash.  In total, 42 Sprint Cars signed in for ESS action, with many of Ohsweken’s regular Corr/Pak competitors on hand to do battle with the travelling ESS stars, while ESS driver Mike Stelter was behind the wheel of local driver Jason Pietz’s #71jr for the evening.  Zimbardi in 5th and Kevin Job in 8th were the two best finishers of Ohsweken’s weekly contingent after starting 11th and 13th respectively.  Lee Ladouceur made the most of an ESS provisional starting spot at the tail of the field by charging from 25th on the grid all the way to 6th when the checkered flag fell.

In the ESSO Thunder Stocks division, Cody McPherson once again showed his competitors the fast way around Ohsweken’s fast 3/8’s mile clay oval by picking up his 4th feature win in 5 tries.  McPherson passed Brad Bacher for the lead midway through the 15 lap event and never looked back.  Behind McPherson, Brad Bacher settled for 2nd, while Dave Bailey charged from his starting spot in 18th to finish 3rd.  Newcomer Russ Davidson brought his sharp looking green and yellow #53 home in 4th, and the ever-consistent Ryan Dinning scored his 3rd top 5 finish in a row after finishing 7th and 6th in the first 2 weeks.  Heat wins went to Brian Pescetti and Bacher.

The ESSO Mini-Stocks continued to show why they are Ohsweken crowd favourites on Friday night as Brent Hill led from the drop of the green flag and held on for the win, but was under constant pressure from a swarm of other drivers, including at times Kevin Hilborn, Chase Hess, Dan Stewart, Mitchell Brown, and Abel Castelein, among others.  Contact between Castelein and Brown resulted in the black flag coming out for Castelein, and both ended up at the tail of the lead lap after being in contention for the win.  Hilborn, Hess, Stewart, and Mike Peterson, up from his 11th starting spot, completed the top 5.  Heat wins went to Castelein and Mark Thorne.  A very hard crash in Heat Race #1 resulted in heavy damage to the machines of Ethan Martin and Jim Swing as they made contact and both hit the wall nearly head-on in turn 4.  Fortunately both drivers emerged unscathed, but the same cannot be said for Swing’s #40 or Martin’s #77x.  The wall also received damage and took a few moments for the track crew to repair.

The Friday Night Fun Stocks division continued to grow this week as 8 drivers took the green flag for the 25 lap feature run on the infield oval.  A spirited battle between Steven Hils and Lee Hils ended with Steven in victory lane with an overheating #5, which had caused Steven to stop on the track and let Lee by earlier in the event.  Lee settled for 2nd followed by newcomer Kacey Huffman, who also works as a cornerman at Ohsweken.

Friday Night Thunder resumes next Friday, June 27 when Grand River Electronics presents a special $1000-to-win DIRT Sportsman Modified Open, along with the ESSO Thunderstocks, ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Friday Night Fun Stocks.  Friday Night Thunder at Ohsweken is affordable family entertainment just a short drive away from most mid-western Ontario locations. Adult General Admission is once again $10, while Seniors & Students (ages 13-17) are $8, and kids 12 and under FREE!  Please visit HYPERLINK "http://www.OhswekenSpeedway.com" for more information. Gates open at 6:00p.m. with the first race taking the green flag at 7:45p.m. this Friday, June 27!
