Lyons Scores Sauble Sweep With Canadian Vintage Modifieds

By Clayton Johns

HEPWORTH, Ont. (August 24, 2015) – Steve Lyons (No.15 Sweers Custom Painting) used an early pass to take the lead from Cassidy March (No.25 H&M Auto) before he held off a swarm of drivers, including second-place finisher Steve Trendell (No.57 Combined Auto & Truck Repair), following a late race restart.

Dustin Hood (No.38 Doug’s Suspension) and March started on the front row for the 25-lap A-Main. March jumped to the early lead while Hood got the freight train treatment and was shuffled backwards, unable to get to the bottom lane.

Lyons took over the point just a couple of laps after the green flag and began to set a blistering pace. Jeremy Riopelle (No.88 Young Drivers of Canada), Jason Keen (No.18 Oakville Automotive) and Trendell all worked past March and began to track down Lyons’ No.15.

Lyons lead was erased following a minor caution, but he was flawless on the ensuing restart and regained his advantage. Second-place starting Trendell spun the tires on the restart and fell back to third as Riopelle advanced to the runner-up spot.

The yellow flag slowed the race again on lap 18 when Brian Atkinson (No.92 Performance Plus Automotive) and Ben Charbonneau (No.2 Steve Scherer Chevrolet) spun together in turn one. Lyons maintained the lead again on the restart as Trendell retook the second spot and Keen forced Riopelle back to fourth.

While Trendell fought to maintain pace with the race leader, he couldn’t challenge Lyons who cruised to the victory. The win was the fourth in a row for the No.15 car and five of the last six races.

In qualifying heat race action, Lyons claimed the win in heat one over Trendell by five car lengths while Atkinson won the second heat over Keen’s No.18.

The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds take a well-deserved week off before returning to Flamboro Speedway on September 5th for the Labour Day weekend. The series is excited to be a part of the track’s annual corn roast and is excited for the return of the CVM Mechanics’ Race following the night’s action.
