McWhirter faces several charges, including 3 counts of
fraud over 5-thousand-dollars and theft over 5-thousand-dollars.
Police say McWhirter had been the focus of an 18-month investigation and was arrested on a Canada-Wide warrant.
McWhirter worked at a financial business in Guelph from 1999 to 2006 and it is alleged he used various means to steal the money.
Canadian Customs officers at Fort Erie informed police here today they had taken a man wanted in Guelph into custody on a Canada-wide warrant.
Guelph officers went to the Peace Bridge customs office today and returned the man ending an 18-month investigation.
"During the investigation, police learned that the male had worked in Guelph for a local financial business from 1999 to 2006 and stole over $2.5 million through various deceitful means," police say.
Kirk McWhirter, 33, of Mount Forrest was charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.
McWhirter appeared in bail court today where it was revealed he worked at Olympic Honda in Guelph. He was returning to Canada from a golf trip in the U.S. when he was taken into custody at the border.
