5 years ago, I did a poll on CRO on the top Canadian Stock Car drivers. Here are the results:
1. Junior Hanley; 2. Steve Robblee; 3. Don Beiderman; 4. Peter Gibbons; 5.Earl Ross; 6. Don Thomson; 7. J.R. Fitzpatrick; 8. Derek Lynch; 9. D.J. Kennington; 10. Mark Dilley; 11. Jeff Hanley; 12. Bill Zardo; 13. Kevin Dowler; 14. Dave Whitlock; 15. Kerry Micks;
16. Tom Walters; 17. Tom Milligan; 18. Vic Parsons; 19. J.P. Cabana; 20. Steve Tiemersma; 21. Glen Watson; 22. Scott Steckley; 23. Jason Shaw; 24 Pete Shepherd; 25. Jack Monaghan
Based on the criteria given above, I would have to go with Junior as my choice.
Ron Fellows may be a great driver but he is mainly a sports car racer not a stock car driver. If you include him, why not include Jacques Villeneuve, Paul Tracey, Greg Moore, Scott Maxwell, etc. all of whom drove stock cars at one time.
What about the open wheel guys, Warren Coniam, Pete Bicknell, etc.
I also don't agree that the present day guys are not as good. Racing has changed and is ruled by $$$$ today. The drivers today do not get the chance to race as often as those in the past to show their skill. I think guys like Fitzpatrick, Ranger, Kennington, Steckley, etc. may be just as good.
