NEELY WINS RACE, TAKES OVER POINT'S LEAD

Rob Neely grabbed his second win of the 2012 Lucas Oil Can-Am Midget series taking the lead on the last lap at Flamboro Speedway (Ont) on Saturday night and moved into first place in the tight point's battle. The lead changed hands three different times in the last two laps and had the fans standing for the finish.
Thanking Lucas Oil, Lincoln Welders, Bicknell Racing/Hoosier Tires and Pippard Automotive in Victory Lane, Neely said the 'word of the day' was 'Zoom, Zoom'!
"We have a young fan from Orillia, Ont., Toby Pearsall, that I'd like to dedicate this win to. Happy Birthday Toby, this win's for you!"

Corey Moesker took the lead at the drop of the green in this 25 lap feature followed by James Gray and Todd Cresswell. Neely, starting 9th, was in the top five on lap two. Gray took over the lead on the next goaround and fought to shake off Moesker. Turning up the wick, Gray stretched his lead by 5 car lengths as Moesker now had Cresswell on his tail. A strong Chris Holman held off Neely for the next few laps.

With nine laps in Neely found an opening and put Holman behind him as Cresswell was knocking on the door of Moesker. One lap later Cresswell dove in under Moesker and took over the second spot setting up what looked to be a one two finish with Gray. Two laps later Neely made his move on Moesker taking over third place and kept the top two cars in his sites. Darren McLennan joined the top five.

With five laps to go the excitement began. Gray and Cresswell fought hard for the lead as Neely was two car lenghts behind. McLennan began to have problems with a fuel pump and fell back into the field. Mack DeMan motored around Moesker for the fourth spot. With one lap to go Cresswell made his move and took the lead but brushed the wall coming out of turn two allowing Gray to catch back up as they entered turn three. With Gray to the outside and Cresswell the inside they made contact and both spun. Neely missed Cresswell by inches by quickly going to the low side. The yellow came out and Cresswell was out of the race as Gray started at the rear.

Neely took over the point for the restart and drove hard into turn one. DeMan went to his inside in turn two as they fought side by side going down the backstraight. DeMan had a few inches on Neely coming out of four but Neely poured it on and crossed the start/finish line ahead of DeMan by a wheel. The crowd stood and cheered in appreciation. It was one of the closest finishes in the 47 year history of the Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets. Moesker was third followed by Holman and Adrian Stahle.

Heats were won by McLennan and Gray. The Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets next travel west to the tight 'Bull Ring' of Grand Bend Speedway on Saturday, August 25th. Only 16 points separate the top three with 4 races remaining in the schedule. The final race will be at Flamboro Speedway on September 22nd to decide the 2012 Lucas Oil Can-Am Midget Champion. Fans should buy their tickets early!
