2013 Midget Champion ready to return to tackle the 2015 Season

For fans that are familiar with the OSCAAR Midget series, the name Robin McLean is always in the mix of preseason championship favorites. With a strong fourth place finish in 2014, and a championship in 2013, Robin has his eyes set on becoming the first OSCAAR Midget Champion in 2015.

Robin lives in Gilford Ontario and is home for the # 97 Midget racing team. During the week Robin owns his own CNC Aerospace Machine Shop, and most likely can be found thinking about racing.

Robins’ road to oval track racing took a bit of a different route as he started out on two wheels racing motocross at the age of 12. After ten years of jumps and playing in the dirt, Robin tried his hand at enduro racing, thunder cars and then seven years of Karting, before joining the Midget Series.

It is always interesting to find out how a driver ends up driving a certain class of car and when asked Robin had four quick responses “ 1. Affordability 2. Only needing 1 person 3. Very close to Karts, which I liked and the main reason was 4. The speed to money spent ratio”

As in any series or class of cars things are constantly changing and the Midget series is no different. When asked in his four years with the series what has changed the most, Robin is quick to respond “the technology in the cars” . Throughout the years people are building safer chassis, and teams are now spending the time they need to ensure the cars are properly maintained and race ready when they unload each week.

Like every race driver Robin has a little wish list to see things improve with the series. The addition of left side mirrors he feels will benefit the racing. Robin would also like to see on track infractions be taken more serious with less tolerance. (as a side note I have relayed this message to Bob and Dale)

When it was being discussed late in the 2014 season about the possible merger with OSCAAR, Robin thought that this is just what the series needed. Robin states “ everyone in Ontario racing knows OSCAAR, they draw the biggest crowds, put on the best racing, and with the addition of the midget series will only make the series stronger”

While Robin main focus is on the 2015 OSCAAR Midget Championship, he is also looking towards to the future with his sights set on hopefully moving up to an OSCAAR Modified in the next few years. But Robin is quick to point out “ no matter what I am racing there will always be a midget in my shop !”

OSCAAR would like to wish Robin and his team the best of luck in his quest for his second championship in 2015!

OSCAAR Racing is presented to race fans throughout Ontario with the help of several dedicated sponsors, including: Knightworks Design, Klotz Synthetics Canada, Hoosier Tire Canada, Finishline Fabricating, JBM Leasing Ltd., Jenco Equipment, North Toronto Auction, Race2way.ca, Reinhart Trailers, South Shore Services
