Thanx Thunder and Medic. That does clear quite a bit up.

Thunder and Medic make some great points, I also have over 25 years in the fire service and realize that these have to be local decisions. I am not speaking for one one track or another because every municipal and regional council makes their own choices as to if they feel they have resources available for "rent" or not. Being able to have adequate response personnel can be an issue in some departments as well, some councils may not have the appetite to commit 4-6 (fire and/or EMS) personnel and equipment on a Saturday night, others will be able and happy to. I have seen many levels of services at different tracks and I thank Jim for raising this question.  Most of the responses have been heartfelt and helpful. Every-ones goal is to have a safe race season so let get all that personal and vehicle safety equipment checked, up to date, and lets work with our local tracks and racers to have a great season.

I guess then someone has to get together with the track and ask the municipalities whether they have the ability and how much. Cannot hurt to ask.

I for one am happy to see such an interest in this thread. Unfortunately a lot of racers think about safety last so it is great to see such interest in what sort of level of service the racers themselves would like to see at their home track.

I wish everyone a safe and successful race season I am sure I will see some of you at least a few times. We still make it out here and there even though I have moved on to other activities.

not sure who does it at Ohsweken but i think theyre the best around...all wearing firesuits, helmets, lots of extenguishers...they have the equipment to cut open a car and i hear they train quite a bit on equipment use...i believe they also do a few drag strips...hopefully we dont need them but a big reason we race there cuz i hate having to clean all that clay off every week...

OK...reading through all the posts it points out some really good input.  But before putting the cart before the horse(so to speak).....how about starting with the tracks.....because ultimately...it is the track crew that are the actual first responders....and if they are not qualified then that is where you need to start.  Sorry but I have always had an issue with T-shirts and regular pants.  At a race track....they just don't cut it.

And Yettie, my answer is yes......safety is always first in my book.  As a professional driver it is my main priority.....but I'm intelligent enough to know that not everyone takes it that way.  Get over yourself if you think your life is worth more than mine....yours and everyone elses is just as equally important all around and I would never jeopardize a life over dollars.  But look at the big picture....when the dollars run out....so does the venue.

i've been informed that BSW is training their infield fire crews by trained firefighters and Nascar safety people! Kudos to Barrie Speedway for taking our safety in mind! Also to all other tracks that actually train their volunteers properly, thank you for watching our backs and not just the bottom line!!

Sunset Speedway had a Training Session for the Clean Up Staff and Track Workers in 2010 on the Use of Fire Extinguishers put on by Members of the Innisfil Fire Department. Sunset at least had the foresight to have the track workers aware of How an Extinguisher Works and How to Approach a small fire. Can it be improved... Of Course. Can better Fire Clothing be Used... Absolutely, But it is a start.

Towards the Later part of 2011 Barrie Speedway had Bright Yellow Fire Clothing for the Clean Up Crew. Again could it be better... Yes. Barrie will have the Yellow Fire Clothing for the Crew again this year.

Safety is an Attitude, Some Have It, Some Don't. I personally wear a helmet as a photographer when I am on or around the Track Surface, because the Unknown can happen at any time, parts fall off, etc. Do I wear Fire Clothing... Not at this time, but I will be wearing the Yellow Suit this year as it was offered to me. I might look like a Giant Fat Canary out there, but at least I'll be around for you to ridicule me.

I hope that all the Drivers and Track Staff at All Tracks have a Safe & Happy 2012 Race Season wherever you race.

Ohsweken has a very fast reponse to fire.  I shot a 55 photo sequence of a wreck
with a fire, and the fire crew were on the scene in just over 6 seconds.
(see www.racepulse.com for the sequence - samples below)

(The camera I used shoots about 8 frames per second. Counting from the 1st photo, which is more or less at impact: he hit the wall at about 1 3/8 seconds after impact, he caught on fire at about 3 seconds after impact and the fire truck was on the scene at 6 3/8 seconds after impact. )

You really can't compare NASCAR Safety crew to localtracks. Tracks couldn't afford to have the safety crew NASCAR has.

I think tracks in Ontario are do a great job. I can't recall hearing that someone was injured because of the safety workers and also never hear anyone saying their response time to get to the incident was bad.

The question was would you be willing to pay $1 more on your pit gate admission nightly to have actual paramedics on site rather than general first aid providers?

If it was an extra $1.00 who would say no?

I would like to hear from a track owner what is required at each track, as I bet they would have to tell the company that insures the track what they have wouldn't they?

Ya CRO I suppose your right about that.  I guess as long as there is enough at the track to manage as issue till an ambulance shows up its not that bad, no different then having to wait for one anywhere else in life.

However, I can seeing paying an extra buck to have a pumper truck at the track, or even to get the staff in helmets and firesuits, even cheap suits.

I still think fire is the one thats gonna get us, and mostly cause the crews arent dressed for it.

It amazes me that those on track staff dont wear helmets!  I ride mountain bikes at facility where they will stop you and make you walk your bike if you dont have a lid on.

LOL Yetti.  I dont know something about seeing someone split their mellon wide open after taking a ride off a cars hood just isnt something Id like to see, thats all.  Head injuries are the worst in my mind.
