Border Patrol – A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands

Craig Revelle – June 10, 2013

The recent bout of heavy rain that has caused havoc throughout the previous week, made for some wild racing on the weekend at area tracks.  My plans were to attend Can Am Motorsports Park on Friday night and on to Brockville Speedway night for the rescheduled Ogilvie’s Auto Triple Crown Modified and Sportsman Series races on Saturday night and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday as they made their fourth attempt to get the 2013 season underway.

With heavy rain falling on Thursday night, and continuing into Friday, it was clear that there would be no racing anywhere in the region.  Brewerton Speedway had cancelled Friday’s program on Thursday evening, and Mohawk Raceway, Can Am and several other soon followed suit.  Mohawk Raceway had the Empire Super Sprints scheduled, and a make up date is expected to be announced later this week.

Saturday was a much better day, but the rain from the previous couple days was still a big problem for the tracks.  Brockville Speedway continued on though after a lot of hard work getting the track ready to race on.  To make matters worse, another rain shower crept into the area as race teams began to arrive, but the show continued on.  Lee Gill was the Modified feature winner for the second consecutive week as he held off a late race charge from Bobby Herrington.  Danny O’Brien, Luke Whitteker and Mario Clair rounded out the top five.  Several cars were involved in a lap six red flag that ended the night for many drivers.  In the Sportsman main event, Chris Herbison finally put his early season bad luck behind him with his first win of the season over Steve Bernier, Jonathan Ferguson, Jon Mills and Shane Pecore.  Other winners on the night included Paul Klager in the visiting Mod Lite Series, Tristan Draper in the Rookie Sportsman, Nicholas Gauvreau in the Street Stocks and Quincy Roberts in the Rookie division.

Cornwall Speedway was the next stop on my weekly schedule.  After getting rained out the first three weeks, many teams were antsy to get the season started. Despite the over saturated track from all the rain over the past few weeks, the show went on.  A new record for cars in the pits was set with 156 different racing machines filling the pit area, and overflowing onto the infield of the track. It was a wild night to say the least as several cars had heavy damage in many classes.  Stephane Lafrance was the Modified feature winner, with Luke Whitteker, Laurent Ladouceur, Mario Clair and Chris Raabe rounded out the top five.  Chris Herbison completed the weekend sweep of the Sportsman division at Cornwall with an impressive performance.  He crossed the finish line ahead of Corey Wheeler, Mathieu Boisvert, Joey Ladouceur and Jason Shipclark.  Other winners on the night included Paul Klager in the Mod Lites, Dave Bissonnette in the Pro Stock class, Nicholas Gauvreau once again in the Semi Pro Division and Joel Pilon in the Mini Stocks.

In other action around the area, Evans Mills Speedway hosted their first ever Asphalt Assault on Saturday night with the invasion of the Empire Super Sprints.  Kevin Ward Jr. was the inaugural race winner, ahead of Doug Emery, Matt Tanner, Corey Sparks and Jeff Cook.  Bill Gill won the Modified feature over Jordan McCreadie and Lance Willix.
