Dale Earnhardt Jnr And Tom Walters Join The Pepsi Generation.
« on: September 19, 2007, 07:15:34 PM »
NASCAR's most popular driver will be in the No. 88 Chevrolet when he moves to Hendrick Motorsports next season, the team announced Wednesday. Earnhardt's car will be sponsored by Pepsi, with the company's Mountain Dew soft drink and Amp Energy drink featured on the car. The National Guard will also be involved in the sponsorship
The new number and sponsor are another step in the rebranding of Earnhardt from party boy to serious corporate pitchman, one that now can be heavily marketed to the under-21 crowd.

"I never thought a car number would create this much excitement," said car owner Rick Hendrick, who has won five Nextel Cup titles. "Trying to do it and keep it quiet from the rest of the world until you have it all together, it was probably the toughest thing I've ever done in motorsports."
Earnhardt has driven the No. 8 Chevrolet for DEI since 2000 with Budweiser's sponsorship. He tried to take the No. 8 with him to Hendrick, but stepmother Teresa Earnhardt refused to give up her rights to it. Mark Martin and Aric Almirola will co-drive that car next year and it will be sponsored by the U.S. Army.

Budweiser will become the primary sponsor next season for the No. 9 Dodge driven by Kasey Kahne.

"It's important that we work hard and make a good statement as we close this out and start a new chapter next year," Earnhardt said. "The anticipation is at a boiling point. I'm ready to get over to Rick's and start racing."

The No. 88 was retired by Robert Yates Racing, which asked NASCAR to transfer the number to Hendrick for Earnhardt.

"Ralph Earnhardt drove the No. 88 Olds in 1957 and because of this number's history with the Earnhardt family, I felt car No. 88 should continue with Dale Earnhardt, Jr.," Robert Yates said in a statement. "Younger fans don't realize I built cars and raced against Ralph. I also had a very close relationship with Dale Earnhardt, Sr. I'm proud to transfer this number to Dale Jr."

The driver unveiled his line of candy bars, "Dale Jr.'s Big Mo'," at a candy expo in Chicago on Tuesday.

Earnhardt had already signed personal services contracts with Adidas and Sony. He became the fourth athlete to receive a clothing line from Adidas, joining soccer's David Beckham, football's Reggie Bush and basketball's Tracy McGrady.

The car sponsorship was announced in Dallas, where 1,500 Pepsi bottlers from the U.S.A. Canada and Mexico were holding their annual meeting. Earnhardt appeared before that group before publicly announcing the deal.It was also announced that Pepsi would become the major sponsor  of the Mexican Grand Prix and would also be the primary sponsor of the Team Pepsi No. 88 Tom Walters car in the fledgling Nascar Canadian Series.

I will believe it when i see it as far as Walters in the NCTS. Its a long time until the first race of 08 and if he does get this deal together i don't  think it will turn out well.

Nice try

1.  Look at the last sentence.  No space after the period, plus
2.  The Mexican Grand Prix?  Hasn't been held since 1992, is scheduled to return in 2009, and has NOTHING to do with NASCAR.
3.  No mention anywhere on the NASCAR website.

The last time Barrienews posted something it was spot on so i am going to take this as basically unproven fact, just like the last thing!

I'm with marcisfan.

Funny thing, as I was watching the race at Kawartha tonight, the announcer pointed out the For Sale sign on Walters car.  My friend and I actually has a short conversation about how there would likely be threads started by the time we got home, with all sorts of speculation as to what was going on.  I'll wait to hear officially from 'the horses mouth' before I believe it.

Whatever Walters choses to race, and wherever he chooses to race, I'm sure he'll continue to be successful!

If true, good for Tom. He will be a tough competitor in a a field with quite a few other tough competitors, but I'm sure he will do well. Another driver with a history of racing at Barrie (and Sunset, and Kawartha), moving on to bigger and better things, we should all be proud of our tracks and the accomplishments of those who have made it to Canada's top series while having a stop along the way at the place we call home...

As i have said i will believe it when i see it . This is the third or forth year that the Walters to cascar/nascar series rumor has sprung up . For the record i have watched Tom since he was in the six cylinder class and he is a dedicated racer , but i am not sure he is cascar/ nascar material in 2008. I would also take umbrage that cascar/nascar is the top series in Canada . Is the top series in Canada the one that promised a 30 % increase in the purse and then reneged back to 1982 standards ? If most miles traveled and most money spent to race is the the threshhold of the best series in Canada cascar/nascar is the hands down winner .

IMO if Tom and Nigel are smart they will just stay where they are .....oh yaa  Bourque would like you to pick up those transmissions , please bring cash or Nigel's credit card.

Do you have proof of this available anywhere else online ? A press release of some sort perhaps ? Oh yes  ( Joe Chance ) if you have a question concerning Bourque , show some class and don't ask it on here . What am I thinking ? It's a write then think post !

Joechance did you read the NCATS stats thread discussing the prize money won this year by teams in the series?  From the comments of a couple drivers that actually competed in the series they have managed to get what NASCAR promised for payments like being paid 4 times in the season unlike years past.  And considering there were really only 20 or so teams competing then comparing them to previous years payouts is really not valid as we all know the series did have more cars back then.  Let's see what happens as more teams join the series and compare like car counts to see which is the better paying series.

Someone else still holds the rights to the number 88 in the NACTS...
