Mr Walters goes to Sunset June 30
« on: July 01, 2007, 07:25:13 AM »
The night started with an on track fan autograph session . Say what you will about Sunset but they do have a crap load of cars even excluding the Wrecking Yard Refugees (Four Funs) which I have previously stated my disdain for . They had the Can Am midgets which made for 5 classes of racing (too many) and had to rope off a large section of the parking lot to accommodate all the cars since the pits and infield  would not hold them all .  The crowd was very good and I would go as far as to say the largest I have seen at Sunset in a couple of years.

The LLM car count was 18 or 19 down a bit from last weeks reported 24 but still enough for a decent weekly show. Walters started last in the first heat being a new car and carved his way to 2nd turning lap times that were about 3/10 of a second quicker then anyone else . It appeared there was some animosity towards old Stompin Tom from the out set but it came to light more in his second heat . Walters starting at the back again had to deal with a couple of weapons such as the #17 of Kevin Kevin Cornelius
and the # 69 of Ciccerelli .  The 69 seems to be looking in the rear view mirror more then the windshield which would explain why he has such a hard time staying in any one lane Walters was able to negotiate this rolling chicane and move towards the front until he got to the #17 of Kevin Cornelius who's driving style is to drive into the corner and almost bring the car to a complete stop before turning to head the other direction . Walters must have also been surprised by the #17s unique driving style of parking the car at the apex of the corner and tapped him causing Cornelius to spin . Both cars were sent to the back and on the restart the #17 then drilled Walters spinning him and causing another restart and a brief warning to both drivers by the starter. Walters was able to drive back up to 4th or 5th before the checkered fell .

I don't know how Shadow gives such great race reports he must either write the stuff down or has a great memory I do or have have neither and these are just the hi lites as I recall them .

The Midgets put on some good racing in their heats the Thunder cars and Mini Stocks AKA the Honda class were OK . The Junker division (four funs) ran and ran and ran and the only thing memorable about them was the fact the they ran prior to the second round of heats for the LLMs and  oiled down the track so bad for the LLMs that it made any kind of passing or good racing impossible . Perhaps Glen could require a diaper on these crapwagons like the run on the NHRA dragsters to stop the goo that they seem ooze from every former gasket in them from ruining the track .

The LLM feature started and ran to almost half way in side by side gridlock caused by the #40 and #6  running two wide at the front stopping even Morrow who had started in the second row from making progress until Parsons and a back marker got together causing a restart. Morrow made short work of going to the front and running away with the main only interupted by the THREE more cautions caused by Parsons spinning out . Parsons finally parked it after causing the his 4th caution much to the relief of everyone in the joint allowing Morrow the win and Walters to pick his way through the junk up to a respectable 4th despite the constant pointing to him by the starter everytime he got near anyone . It would seem that the officials and perhaps the management were less then happy to see the return of the prodigal son . IMO Walters would be better off to return to Barrie since it would seem he isn't going to get a fair shake at the Innisfil dump.

It was 11 pm when the LLMs main finished and they still had 4 more features to run so I am guessing  that those who chose to stay left about the same time as the all night drive ins let out  . I chose to head home and have a jacuzzi and I think I made the right decision . Next week I am going to Flamboro or somewhere but it sure wont be Sunset.

Btw in the second heat Walters didnt spin the 17 he spun Quesnelle in the 57 and then on his way back up through he was spun by the 17 so theres that correction and also Ciccireilli doesnt have a mirror in his car so he there for cant mirror drive.

 # 57 - or - #17  sorry if I got the wrong junker as for Ciccirelli if he does not have a mirror he must have a neck like a Hoot Owl since it was obvious he was looking backwards more then he was looking forwards.

Pinecrest it was my second time watching at Barrie without being with a CASCAR team...I mean just watching a regular Saturday night show and it was GREAT without Tom Walters there. It wasn't a crashfest....I was talking to some guy the first time I was there asking who was the track favorite and he said anyone but Walters.

I don't know who any of the drivers are Tom Walters included. I however at the end of the night did get to meet a few of them. The Bakers who I must say are very nice people also Keith McLeod who won congrats again. It was an awesome race. I just may go back again.

It doesn't matter to me where Walters races as long as the bashing on this board stops. We are all wanting the same thing here and that is GREAT racing in ONTARIO!  :)

So lets go racing and bring back the fun and support of each of our drivers.

I saw a pretty bad hit last night we must remember this drivers are putting on a show for the fans there is no need for people bashing into each other on th etrack people have to go to work and support families also.

Good luck to all in racing...play safe

Racerwoman as I said in last weeks Barrie thread , most weeks you will find good racing at Barrie but like any track occasionally things go to hell in a hand basket . Let me assure you that the reason things were smooth at Barrie last night had nothing to do with Walters absence but may have been more of a return to normal .

You said ....."So lets go racing and bring back the fun and support of each of our drivers. " and why thats all fine and good , what really puts fans in the stands is rivalries wether its Hanley and Beiderman or Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt . Most people want someone to cheer and someone to boo other wise they would be able to draw 5000 people to a polite game of badminton on a Saturday night locally or 100.000 plus on a Sunday afternoon nationally.

Racerwoman , Barrie's loss is Sunsets gain, don't kid yourself Walters brings in the fans, and as Pinecrest says  he creates rivalries, don't listen to losers. Walters is one one the few who said they were done at Barrie and mean't it.

I can tell you from what ive heard from the few fans that still go to Barrie on Sat. nights that since Walters left a short few weeks ago that attendace is way down. I guess the people that love to hate him have decided to follow him to Sunset so they can continue hating him but also watch one of the best shows around.

Say it aint so Joe say it aint so,you are full of it we have the best racing and a late model battle thats going to get back on track and real interesting,l like watching Walters to but l would not leave my lawn chair to go to Sunset even if you carried me to a limo and gave me a free ticket l still would not go.All the action is in the pits we have the best seats in the house when you come back with a mouthful of Sunset dust l hope you have enough spit to say you screwed up lol.

I totally agree with the rivalaries thing!!! That is why a guy like Walters puts butts in the seats and the fact hes a great driver!!! Will his departure put a dent in the Barrie fan base?? Well I think the answer to that one is a definitive YES!! But to me this wont really make a huge difference one way or the other as Barrie seems to do pretty good for crowds without his particular followers there!! As stated here before, I think the two speedway's really target a different audience anyways!! Barrie seems to really target the fans from Barrie, Orillia, Bracebridge areas where Sunset is more geared to Innisfil and York Region!! To me theres no good reason why both places cant thrive and the ONTARIO racing scene will be better for it as previouslly stated!!
