SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS AND SANTA CLAUS COME TO OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY THIS FRIDAY

by Tommy Goudge (July 15, 2009) – A special edition of Friday Night Thunder takes to the track at Ohsweken Speedway this week as Gales Auto Aftermarket presents “Christmas In July” with the Southern Ontario Sprints tour, plus the ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, Bombers, and another edition of Autograph Night!  Santa Claus will be visiting, and fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to our toy drive.  Fans who donate will receive $5 off adult admission or $2 off senior/student admission.

The Southern Ontario Sprints tour brings a tight championship points race to Ohsweken Speedway this Friday for round five of their 2009 season series.  Ohsweken was the site of the second event ever held in club history way back in 1996, and has been a staple on the SOS schedule ever since. More than sixty SOS events have been held at Ohsweken since that time, with Campbellville’s Kevin Job taking the most recent SOS feature win on July 18, 2008.

Adam West took his second SOS feature win of the season last Saturday night at the Brighton Speedway to draw within eleven points of championship leader Justin Martin heading into this Friday’s event.  Warren Mahoney finished third last Saturday and now sits third in the SOS standings, just another nine points behind West.  Bob Crawford and Rookie of the Year award contender Tyler Rand round out the top five in the standings.

Last season’s SOS event at Ohsweken saw twenty-eight entries, and featured a torrid battle for the feature win between Keith Dempster and Kevin Job, with Job coming out on top.  Dempster settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Warren Mahoney, Rob Pietz, and Glenn Styres.  Like Adam West, Styres has claimed two SOS feature wins this season, but missed last Saturday’s event at Brighton, dropping him from the points lead back to sixth in the SOS championship standings.

Meanwhile, the ESSO Thunder Stocks championship chase is also a tight one, as Shayne Pierce was able to extend his lead over Billy Bleich last Friday night, but only slightly, as the gap is still only seven markers.  Ryan Dinning became the sixth different winner in the division last Friday night, and currently sits seventh in the points standings.  Rounding out the top five in the standings behind Pierce and Bleich are Jeremy Bean, Brad Herron, and Lee Winger.

Mitchell Brown continued his domination of the ESSO Mini Stocks last Friday, taking his seventh feature win of the season, but it was another close battle for the win.  Paul Goodale, Abel Castelein, and Mike Evers are just some of the contenders knocking on the door for their first feature win of the season, while Brown is followed in the points standings by Kevin Hilborn, Evers, Rick Emberson, and Dave Goodacre.

Karl Sault leads the way in the Bomber division, but Rodney Rutherford has claimed two of the last three feature wins, including last Friday’s wild race.  Sault is followed in the standings by Kacey Huffman, Jesse McDonald, Team 113, and Dale Cooke.
