Some great memories in there.

Most pics are from the 1972 and 1973 seasons at Sunset and Barrie but there is one shot of Bev Bye's #90 Pontiac Diamond at Sutton (in 1970 I believe) with Ron Melson and "Uncle" Lloyd Reynolds flanking Bev in front of the car. A few years later a youthful Garry Reynolds would take on the number 90 for 4 Barrie titles and in recent years it was used by brother Kevin.

In the pic of Peter DeVries #90 still in Ray Berdan's yellow and black colours you can see in the background my dad's old yellow Ford pickup by the pit shed that he sold Hoosier tires out of.

The orange #5 Chevy Nova on the track at Sunset is Jerry Crawford who was the 1972 Barrie Hooligan champ.

You can also see the Sunset Superbird pace car painted in the gold of point fund sponsor Labatt's in a couple of the pictures.

I read somewhere on the internet about the Superbird... I heard Jackson's had that car and it had not been sold by like 1972 or something so it became the pace car for Sunset. Pretty amazing start for a car that is now worth probably $50,000 or more...

My dad used to take photo's for Barrie Speedway, when I was at his place last we looked for the negatives, he used to have thousands of them, but these were all we could find.

That's too bad Dave I'm sure Statsman would like to see some of those pictures I'm sure.

That is a shame if they are lost for good. When I get back (hopefully sometime this winter :) I am going to track down the guy that did the programs from 1967-1972. He supposedly has some stuff and may have some prints at least. I think your dad took program pics from around 1969-70 until he started driving in 1972.

Ya he took the pics from 69 till he drove in 72, I never thought of the guy that did the programs, but my dad was mentioning about wheelspin news mag, he said he sent a bunch of pics each week, Now the ppl he sent them to I've been trying to look up on here with no success, I'm not great with this net stuff, so maybe you might have better luck, were looking for Danny or his wife Elaine Westwood, they did the write ups each week for wheelspin mag. I cant even find much on the mag except for Dizzys passing.

Not sure but it looks like there is an 8 or 9 year old blonde kid sitting in the stands at Sunset with an ugly pea soup coloured shirt on  ::)  Thanx Mom  ::)

Awesome pics. Racing just looked like so much fun back then. Seems now unless you are building a car and spending big money it just isn't fun.

Was that the old A&W on Bayfield St. beside the Sunoco station pictures?

Kanefreak, It could be me since I remember always wanting to sit right down by the fence. I loved the smell of burning valves, rubber and breaks. Good thing Sunset had such a good safety fence then....sarcasm now off. lol

JT, yes I do believe that is the old A&W. My aunt worked there right about the time of that picture.

Ernie and Jt  That is 100% the A+W as i lived directly across the road from it growing up.My mom worked there as a cook and the servers all roller skated out to your car parked out front with your order and hooked it on your window. Those were the days.

I just found this web site and wanted to tell the others who were wondering that I own the actual Superbird that was a Sunset Speedway pace car in1971 and 1972. I'm the 4th owner and am currently restoring it back to its factory original limelight color. It had many coats of paint when I got it in 1990:
1. Original Limelight
2. Labatt's 50 Gold (1972 pace car colors)
3. Plum Crazy (painted by jackson's for the first owner)
4. Black (painted by the 2nd owner)
I'm looking for original photos of the car when it was a pace car in either of these years. I'm planning to re-letter it as it was in 1970 as the pace car but need more photos to get all the details.
