MOVE ONTO TO FULL SIZE CARS AND/OR TRUCKS.

street stock 33 I don't know where you race but from experience at Delaware to be half decently competitive street stock you need to spend $30,000 plus. One of our team drivers who has driven everything from enduro to super mods told me that a 440 microsprint is easily one of the most evil fast cars he's ever driven. Next year having a new track (1/4 mile progressive banking) & as smooth as silk, scale racing may be the fast way to go!

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned the 9 hp microsprints. Very competitive. Not much slower than the 13 hp trucks. Obviously not as balistic as the 440s. Fairly cheap between 2&4 thousand for a decent car. That's what I'm racing next year.

9hp is the way to go, then if you're having fun and liking the racing deal, start investing in the FULL SIZE stuff, i started in the 9hp, i know a lot of guys that did, good place to get you're feet wet, but then MOVE ONTO TO FULL SIZE CARS AND/OR TRUCKS.  :D

The 9 hp class is a very good class. Tight racing, and, as you said cheap.

Too bad the 13 hp sprint car class didn't work out, they had identical motors to the trucks, only on the sprint chassis, weighing way less (I think about 200-250 lbs less??) and costing less, as they didn't have suspension parts and body work to worry about. They were every bit as fast or faster than the trucks for exactly the same price of a 9 horse car, the difference maybe being 200 dollars more for the larger engine at max. I think 4 grand would easily put you out front in that class. Too bad that class isn't still around.

i have seen guys spend less then a thousand dollars .buy a cheap snowmobile like a  ss yamaha or anything that has a 440 fan with cdi  .take the moter in for refresh.polish the exhaust ports only get some power reeds with the rebuild and  then you are good to go i should say that when you rebuild use only origanal gaskets from dealer  because of thickness issues your rebiult should be no more then 800.00 hundred bucks ..also this way you have something to ride in the wintor.so figure that if you get a snowmobile for 1000.00 + rebuild your about 1800.00 or so but then you can ride both.but it would be cheaper yet if you rebuilt your own moter then you would be about 400.00 hundred in parts that would include new pistons rings ;gaskets and seals etc..once rebuilt always run your oil at 32 to 1 your moter will last for 2 or 3 years without a rebuilt.

I've always thought that a car that gets through the ends will be alot faster than a car that has the motor. that extra speed through the corner gives you the headstart on the straightaway.

PLus, when racing in big packs, a good handling car allows you to run multiple grooves, giving you more passing opportunities.

Just curious, what would the cost of a 440 engine be, with normal modifications performed??

 jack swanston leader of the hurricane club runs a stock 440 with nothing more then minor changes and wins lots .you only need major mods if you run on a dinky track. on big tracks the moters dont matter as much it is more cornering that wins there because you can carry your speed through the ends.

I've got another question though.  If you're running on a fairly tight budget, how are you going to keep up with the guys who have got 5 or 6 grand in their engines?  Say I don't want to spend that kind of money, is there any chance that I could be a top runner?

The nice thing about the mini truck class is that it's a sealed engine.  They're a spec engine, so you know that everyone's engines are the same.  So basically, it comes down to chassis setup and driving abilities, which is what racing should be about in my opinion.

Makes sence.  I guess the main thing I thought of when I was thinking about safety was the fact that you're out in the open, so you could possibly get his by debris or something like that.

Thanks guys.

In response to MoeskerRacing, I cna't see there being much difference safety-wise between the 440s and trucks. Any Grand Bend legal sprint car has so many safety bars, bumpers, and nerf bars, that there really is no difference. Especially if the sprints have leg or foot bars, the whole "greenhouse" section is well protected.

As for wrinkling chassis, the majority of rigid 440s i see have the straight axle front end setup, so worst case scenario you bend one of those, and that's no big deal. I can't see, and haven't seen many chassis fold up before.

In my opinion, a rigid 440 would be cheaper than a truck, but a suspension 440, which definitely appears to be the way to go at the bend, would be about the same price, due to the extra expense of coilovers and such.

you cant even go by grandbend at all you would have to judge the 440s by the hurricane group. grandbend ran suspention cars with 440s .right away the suspention cars have a big edge.the hurricanes also run at bigger tracks that makes it better, costs are way lower you can get a hurricane for lets say 4000.00 complete that is ready to go .tires one set a year with running with hurricanes .grandbend you would need a set every month because it was so small ..grandbend will be better when it is bigger.

Internal mods?  Is that what the fast ones at GB have?  If I was going to get a 440, I would want to be competitive with those ones.

How do you figure that the costs are lower?  I'm sure 440's go through more tires and fuel than the trucks.  Fixing and replacing body parts on the trucks can get expensive, but if you keep your nose clean on the track, you shouldn't have to spend a whole lot on the body.   Cost of traveling to the track is the same.   You hit the wall at those kinds of speeds with a 440, I assume it wrinkles up those chassis' pretty quickly..?

The next thing to think about is safety.  What looks safer to you?  It's pretty easy to figure that one out.

I'm not trying to put the 440 class down or anything here.  I'm actually considering possibly getting into the class myself in the future.

 same thing with the 440s rebuild once a year  .unless you over rev it .cost is cheaper on the 440s then on mini trucks for sure .unless you get stupid and start spending 5 or 6 grand on interal mods on your moter.

What's a 440 engine worth?  How often do you have to rebuild engines though?  I can imagine that it gets costly in that perspective..?  Also how much maintainence is involved with those engines weekly?

With our mini-truck, all we have to do with our engine is change the oil every couple of races, and get it rebuilt about once a season.
