off topic a bit.

I heard many years a go some fool brought a Porsche to the King of the hill in Barrie and crashed and wrecked the car?

Any truth to this?

i think most tracks have at least 1 story like that, that often turn out to be true

I don't know about a Porsche, but a young man totalled his Acura last year. I was away from Barrie for a few years following the CVM, and one year I spent much of the season at Sunset.

I also heard the one about a guy who stole a car in the London area and took it to KOTH at Delaware and raced it. Some fans in the stands told me that one last year when I was there.

As a sideline to that, my family used to own a 1968 Mustang coupe that we sold to someone. It was used as the pace car at Barrie for a while, and while I can't confirm it (I wasn't there when it happened), I heard it ended up in the wall one night and they had to find a new pace car.

A few years back a kid showed up with Daddy's Volvo & plowed it into the wall. The kid in one race came so close to hitting the wall that of course Glen Archer made him race again. Sure enough he smoked the wall then drove right off the track. Someone said the father went to Centennial that week & tried to get Gord Coates to pay for it. I think he was unsuccessful.

The first King of the Hill I participated in was 3 years ago.  Davenport Subaru wanted to showcase some Subaru's at the event, since they were sponsoring the evening.  Well, it was an eye opening experience for me, having never done this sort of thing before, and I watched as 2 RX7's take each other out during one of the runs, a young guy deflecting the front of a Buick (I think) on turn 4.

3 Weeks ago during a persuit race between a Subaru STI and Myself, he tagged the inside wall on the exit of Turn 4 and crunched a fender, headlight, and front mount intercooler.  All in all, the incidents are few and far between, and it's certainly nice to see the appreciation of the crowds.

With regards to Delaware, there's a video on Youtube that shows the stolen car going around the track.  If you search for "King of the Wall" it's not hard to find.

I'll be there this Saturday with a few of my friends, playing with the KOTH regulars.

Hope to see some of you there, and if you see a goldish family sedan with a baby seat in it, with stickers that show Toyo Tires, that's me.  Don't be shocked by all the grey hair.. LOL

Not worried about Shawn, the 240Z that's coming out has about 400 - 500 HP on it, and it barely breaks 2400 Lbs.  Shawn would have to have 800 HP on that 3800 Lb Camaro.

Besides, the 2wd's are doing the deed against each other, and the AWD's same thing.  Regardless who wins, it's all about the show and all for the fans.  For us, it's just plain fun.

I thought the red Honda? was going to hit the wall at the last turn.

They are cool races. I heard about the guy that had the stolen car. Did they arrest him at the track?  I guess if your going to wreck a car make sure it's not your own.

I was hoping someone confirm the one about the guy bring daddys Porsche and wrecked it and cried like a baby as his dad didn't know what he was doing with the car.

The guy the crunched up the stolen car at Delaware, left the car there and walked away, basically disappearing after the event.  Don't know if he was ever caught.  Now, Delaware checks the ownerships of the cars and drivers licenses to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Since we're posting up videos, here's the KOTH from the Davenport event last year, the sponsor of the event (Mike Davenport) was driving the red car, and he asked to get ahead on the launch, so that's what he got.  He's currently heading up to Targa Newfoundland to race in Targa in a modified Subaru SVX.  Now if you are looking for a sponsor of the site, I can be persuaded to do live introductions.  ;D

Just ask.. LOL

He's hosting an SPDA / Customer appreciation day for us, tentatively on October 4th, just after Targa.  If you show up (I'll PM you the details), I'll do the introductions, and you can work your salesmanship.  Will that work for you?  What area are you in?

Sounds like fun.. Competition is always good as long as it's friendly.  If you need deals on tires, we're willing to help, Toyo is our sponsor and we get 40+25% off on certain tires.  That's a huge savings!!  That along with other stuff required for racing, like Nomex SFI approved boots, priced to our members at 25 bucks.. Proban Suits, etc.  Benefits to membership, plus we're all nice guys (we try).

So how do your events work Joe? can anyone come out with their cars or do they have to meet certain car requirements.

Anyone can enter their car and most tracks do it weekly. It's just this one is being made a big point out of due to the prize for the winner. It's normally not this big.

Actually it's not our event, we're just participating in the "king of the hill" event that Barrie speedway puts on.  With Barrie, they usually hold the paying races on one Wednesday / month.  King of the Hill is basically a fill in type of event, it's like the 1/2 time show.  Anyone can enter whatever car they want, provided you run DOT approved tires.  This type of event is held on almost every oval track in Ontario.

The events we hold are quite different, Autoslaloms, Solosprints, Nav Rallies are what we normally play in.  There's an event of that type almost every weekend in Ontario. (See here for the autoslalom calendar: http://solo2.casc.on.ca/schedule/schedule.php or here for the Solosprint Calendar http://www.soloontario.com/event_schedule.html ) Both types of events are "Time Trial" type, and the difference between Autoslalom and Solosprint are, Autoslalom goes around cones, Solosprints are held on big tracks like Mosport.  Some of our guys are into the Castrol Canada Touring Car Championships too, and if you've ever been to the Toronto Grand Prix, I'm the announcer for the Touring Car guys.

interesting Joe...I wonder if BSW would ever consider getting involved with yvu guys, putting on a slalom-style halftime show like using pit road or something...could u guys do that u think? or is it too narrow/not possible....cause a real event wld be super cool and nothing like a side-show!

From the initial group purchase this year, the price for that size was: 235/40ZR17 $162.90 taxes included, plus by being a member of SPDA we give you $100 Dollars of Talon Tire Coupons, plus for this year, we're giving away close to $15000.00 worth of contingency prizes.  So far we've given away 1 set of tires, plus 2 sets of clutches, plus 3000 dollars in Talon Tire coupons.

We try hard to provide member benefits, just for participating in grassroots motorsports.  Look at this link for contingency details: http://spda-online.ca/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=3950&forum=19

Hope this helps.

Anything is possible, and we're open to discussing it, for sure.  I think it'll be a good discussion during the off season, because the Barrie Guys seem to be really really busy.  I've had conversation on other things with Jim Payetta, and the crew up there seems to be quite willing to try anything.  But for the sake of the fans, It may not be too interesting for them to watch time trials.

Yes, this time it'll be a 2 lap KOTH for eliminations, AWD vs AWD, 2WD vs 2WD.  5 lap eliminations best 2 out of 3.

Are you coming?

That' video was taken from Yesterday's Davenport Subaru, Customer appreciation event.  The SPDA (http://www.spda-online.ca) hosted that event to allow the general public a personal experience on what it feels like running on an oval.  From the conversations with BSW and Davenport Subaru, it looks like this event will be run 2 or 3 times next year.

I was the MC of the day, and the great people of the SPDA along with Davenport Subaru put on a top notch event.
