OSCAAR Super Late Models

Year-in-Review: Tied-4th Glenn Watson

By Clayton Johns (@cjohnsmedia)

For the seventh consecutive season, Glenn Watson (#22 Rival Office Solutions/Williamson Uxbride/Shane Michaels RV/Race2way.ca Chevrolet) finished inside the top-five in the OSCAAR Super Late Model championship standings, in a fourth place tie with Charlie Gallant. Glenn finished the year with 665 points each, 76 markers behind champion Brandon Watson.

For Glenn, the season marked a new group of competition that was determined to dethrone the four-time defending champion. Nephew Brandon was successful in knocking his uncle from the spotlight in a season where Glenn was never able to find the rhythm from a year prior.

In 2011, Glenn had a near perfect season as he rattled off seven wins and 11 top-ten finishes to secure his fourth consecutive finish. However, 2012 was a different story. The ‘Red Warrior’ was unable to nail down the handling on his brand new Port City Racecars chassis, ultimately keeping him from successfully completing ‘the Drive for Five’.

The principle difference in 2012 for Glenn was a DNF to start the season at Sunset Speedway after a hard crash in to the front-stretch wall. That combined with a DNF in the Don Biederman Memorial knocked the wind out of the sails of the team that did not win a race in 2012.

That’s not to say the team was unsuccessful in 2012. A solid fourth-place finish at his old stomping grounds at Barrie Speedway got him back in the mix. A top-ten at Sunset two weeks later was followed by a second-place finish at Sauble Speedway in early July. On any other night Watson would have had the car to beat, if it had not been for George Wilson decimating the field en route to the checkered flag.

Two more top-five’s at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and Peterborough Speedway took the team in to August. A 13th-place result at Delaware Speedway was a blow in the tight championship standings. Glenn bounced back with a pair of top-ten’s at Peterborough and Sunset in September, before the DNF at Kawartha. Sitting on the slimmest of championship hopes entering the Autumn Colours Classic and appearing determined to earn a win in 2012 but, Glenn could only muster a 12th-place finish. In contention for the lead early on, he was sent to the back as an involved car in a mid-race incident that took away his chances at the win.

While Glenn’s on track performance appeared to fall below his standards, he never wavered from his professional and competitive attitude in the pits. Glenn Watson is expected to return in 2013 for a chance to tie Rob Clarke with the most OSCAAR championships all-time with five.

The OSCAAR Super Late Model tour and all its officials congratulate Glenn Watson on his fourth-place finish in the 2012 championship standings.
