School Busses Return To Brighton

For the ninth time in 5 years a fleet of school busses hit the 1/3 mile clay oval at Brighton Speedway on Saturday, June 13th.  All thirteen modified , former 46 passenger vehicles were ready, willing and able to please a standing room only crowd.  Presented by Leon’s Furniture of Trenton, with speeds reaching unsafe for carrying school children paces, the track soon became a whirlwind of dirt throwing racing action.  Taking home the win was the #77 school bus of Bernie Rhebergen, from Brighton, sponsored by AutoPro.  Bernie is not a first time school bus winner, and visited Victory Lane earlier in the night after winning the spectator one on one race in his wife’s Pontiac Montana van.  One on One racing involves fans in the stands racing what they drove to the track in a one lap, 2 car at a time, elimination race during intermission.

“I love the challenge of racing on dirt, with it’s unpredictable and tacky surface, and doing it in the not so usual vehicles is a riot.  Driving a bus at that speed is a blast, especially when another one is coming up beside you and you can’t let them get passed.  You have to gauge the length of both busses and hope no one spins out. Taking the van out for the one on one racing is always fun too, and I get a little bit of practice as one of the Gord’s Water “Van”tactics drivers. I’ll take both these fun wins and celebrate with all of the drivers at Brighton Speedway this week, and gear up for hopefully 2 more next weekend with my Gord’s Water Van on Saturday and endurance car on Sunday,” said Rhebergen following the events.

Other drivers celebrating with Bernie are Doug Anderson of Trenton in his #72 Brighton Automotive Pro Stock, Sean Johnston, from Wolfe Island in his #15 Picture This Pure Stock, Jeff Sallans of Glen Miller, in his #72 Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified and Kyle Sopaz of Carrying Place in his #12 Bill’s Johns Comp 4, who all won their respective Feature Race.   Honourable mentions go to first time flag wavers Beau Brown (#75) of Brighton and Mat Vanderlinden (#9) of Trenton in the Canadian Modified Qualifier Heats, and Rick Phillips (#7) of Trenton in his Pure Stock.

The next race event is June 23, 2009, when Dibbitt's Excavating presents the Brighton Automotive Fan Appreciation Night, featuring the Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified, Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks, Bill's Johns Comp 4 and Picture This Pure Stocks, plus the Northumberland Lakeshore Mayor’s Hospice Cup Challenge and the Gord's Water Vantastics. Pit Gates open at 4:00 pm, and Main Gates open at 5:30 pm.  Green Flag flies at 7:00pm. On Sunday, June 21st, bring Dad to the Hotch’s Auto Parts 200 Lap Father’s Day Endurance Race, that starts at 2:00pm.  For more information on these events, and the upcoming schedule, visit www.brightonspeedway.com.
