Brandon Lands on “Easey” Street at Ohsweken

by Tommy Goudge (June 27, 2008) –
A stellar field of 32 Sportsman Modifieds signed in to compete for a $1,000 winner’s cheque on Friday night at Ohsweken Speedway, and at the end of the 30 lap feature, the surprise victor was Brandon Easey of St. Catharines.  Grand River Electronics presented the Friday Night Thunder action this week during an evening which also saw Brian Pescetti, Mitchell Brown, and Lee Hils visit victory lane.

Rick Bellante and Robbie Rounce paced the field to the green flag to start the 30 lap feature, but Bellante retired from the race after just a handful of laps, leaving Rounce at the front trying to fight off the snarling pack of cars behind him.  Rounce hung on to the lead until the 10th circuit when the #06 of Easey slipped past and began to pull away.  Meanwhile “Mighty Mouse” Mat Williamson began to make his presence felt in the top 10 after taking a promoter’s option and starting 25th, along with Paul Gaboury who started 20th.  Despite a late caution for a Darren Peters spin which bunched the field for a dash to the finish, Easey was not seriously challenged and came home with the victory.  Williamson eventually settled for 4th while Gaboury finished 7th, and 24th place starter Chad Chevalier took the 9th position.  Rounce, Jim Johnstone, Williamson, and Brad Rouse followed Easey to the finish line to complete the top 5.
4 very competitive heat races were won by Easey, Peters, Bellante, and Bill Willard, while Boyd MacTavish won a stacked consolation race filled with many normally front-running cars.  Rob Pratt, a favourite to end up in victory lane before the evening began was involved in a crash in his heat race and could not make repairs to start the Consolation race.

In ESSO Thunder Stock action, Brian Pescetti held off a determined Cody McPherson to take victory, and become just the 3rd different driver to take feature win honours in the division this season.  Mike Thorne and Mark Saul brought the field to the green flag to start the 15 lap feature, but it was Brian Pescetti quickly making his way to the lead.  Close racing prevailed during the race, but McPherson advanced through the field without putting a mark on his #777 and applied pressure to Pescetti, but after leading lots of laps this year with little to show for it, the driver of the #62 was not to be denied on this night.  Pescetti and McPherson raced to the white flag side by side, but a caution flag at the same time reverted the field back to the last completed lap and created a 2 lap dash to the finish.  McPherson tried once again to get by Pescetti on the restart, but Pescetti held his ground in the top groove and drove to victory.  McPherson settled for 2nd, followed by Vince Fargnoli, Brad Herron, and Brad Bacher.  Heat race victories went to Bacher and Thorne.

The ESSO Mini Stock division witnessed it’s first repeat winner of the season on Friday night as 15 year old Mitchell Brown was in victory lane at the end of the 15 lap feature.  Brown also won the Round #2 feature on May 23.  Rob Slater and Mike Peterson were on the front row to start the feature, with Peterson taking the early lead.  Behind him, Brown quickly advanced from his 6th starting spot and began reeling in Peterson while a fierce battle developed for positions 3-7 between many leaders in the points standings, including Abel Castelein, Rick Emberson, and Mark Thorne.  Brown slipped by Peterson and began to put distance on the field while the Steve Hess piloted his #777x into 2nd, and stayed there until the end of the race.  Brown took the win followed by Hess, Peterson, Kevin Hilborn, and Mark Thorne, however Hess and Peterson both ran afoul of the post-race tech inspection and were moved to the back of the finishing order.  Peterson and Hess took heat race victories earlier in the evening.

In the Friday Night Fun Stock division, Lee Hils cruised to victory in the 25 lap feature to become the first repeat winner in the division.  Mike Taylor and week #1 feature winner Karl Sault finished 2nd and 3rd.

Friday Night Thunder resumes next Friday, June 27 when Engine Pro Racing presents Night #1 of the American Sprint Car Series “Northern Summer Nationals” featuring the ASCS Sprints on Dirt region versus the ASCS Patriot region, plus the ESSO Thunderstocks, ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Friday Night Fun Stocks.  Friday Night Thunder at Ohsweken is affordable family entertainment just a short drive away from most mid-western Ontario locations. great drive by Matt Williamson from 25th (promoters option) to 4th. Nice 32 car field considering Ransomville was running sportsmen the same night. Respectable number of Thunder Street stocks also (21). Minis seem to be slipping in numbers (18)
