TSN Announces 2007 Auto Racing Schedule
Posted by: RAD on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 - 08:04 PM
With increased coverage of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series and the recent additions of the NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, TSN's auto racing lineup for the upcoming 2007 season is the most comprehensive ever with a total of 105 races from five different series.

The network's schedule features 28 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races (up from 21 races in 2006), all 35 NASCAR Busch Series races, the entire 12-race NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, all 17 Formula One races, and 13 races from the Indy Racing League (IRL). All NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series and NASCAR Busch Series races are available in High Definition on TSN HD (broadcast schedules below).

TSN's live coverage of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series gets underway on February 10 with the first race of the season - the Budweiser Shootout. TSN will broadcast a 30-minute pre-race show prior to each of the network's 28 races. Highlighting the schedule is the Daytona 500, which will air February 18 at 2:30 p.m. ET. A SportsCentre correspondent will be on-site from Daytona International Speedway to cover all the action from the day's events and race.

Leading up to the Daytona 500, TSN will televise ESPN's NASCAR Now, a daily news show dedicated solely to NASCAR, from February 12 to 15. Last year, TSN's coverage of the Daytona 500 attracted a national average audience of 568,000 viewers, making it the most watched motorsport race in TSN history. TSN recorded record ratings for its coverage of the 2006 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series with a national average audience of 332,000 viewers, up 15 per cent from 2005.

This year also marks the first season of TSN's multi-year deal as the exclusive Canadian English broadcaster for all 35 NASCAR Busch Series races. The 10-month NASCAR Busch Series season gets underway February 17 at Daytona with the Orbitz 300 and concludes at Homestead in Miami on November 17. TSN will have live coverage of the inaugural race in Montreal on August 4, at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

TSN will also have coverage of the newly-formed NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, which launches in May. TSN will televise 12 one-hour broadcasts - one for each of the series' 12 races - including race coverage, driver interviews and features.

TSN offers Formula One fans a trip around the globe in 2007, televising the entire 17 race F-1 season, including pre-race and qualifying. TSN's schedule is highlighted by live coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix from Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on June 9 and 10. The 2007 F-1 season gets underway March 17 with the Australian Grand Prix (Qualifying on March 16). Last year, TSN's average audience for F-1 was 179,000 viewers, up 19 per cent from 2005.

TSN also has coverage of 13 races from the IRL, beginning with the XM Satellite Radio Indy 300 on March 25. The crown jewel of the series - the Indianapolis 500 - airs live on TSN May 27.

What the release doesn't note is that some of the Busch races are either going to be shown live on TSN2 or tape-delayed to a ridiculous hour like before. If it's on TSN2, that means you have to purchase the full digital package from Rogers to get it (same with Speed Channel this year as well.) Furthermore, 3 of the cup races which are on FX/TNT aren't even being picked up by TSN, which means unless you pay Rogers MORE money for Nascar In-Demand you are SOL for seeing them (June Pocono, June Michigan and Watkins Glen IIRC). Depending on your cable package and what they do with Speed/TSN2 you might see LESS races than in 2006. If they're doing this to the top-2 NASCAR divisions, can you guys imagine the screwing CASCAR's going to receive as far as a time slot? As far as I'm concerned, it's just one step closer to PPV races...

Would you care to cite your source of this apparently "inside" knowledge of TSN and Rogers plans for the channel as a whole, nevermind the race programming? It seems to me that you are making some rather assumptive statements. Please, cite a source of some kind or say nothing at all. To do otherwise only stirs up needless negativity and it may not be accurate information to begin with. I am a Rogers subscriber and have heard nothing of any major changes other than some channel reassignment which, I believe, may have already taken place as Speed now has a new channel number as does TSN. Speed has always been an second tier service with Rogers and it remains so. TSN, on the other hand, has always been a basic cable channel, and it remains as such as well. Btw, what is TSN2? Do you mean TSN HD? If that's correct then it is true that you need the additional cost programming package and , of course, an HD TV set.

Well, I'm just not that worried about it. Watching racing on TV is not a favorite pastime for me anyway, especially ovals, unless it's a tape delay of a race I attended. Largely a non-issue for most I'd suspect.

TSN2 (as everything on TSN is in HD now) isn't available as part of the "Regular" Rogers analog package and Speed is supposed to be shifted out of its slot ala The Golf Channel sometime before Speedweeks, as one of the local radio stations was talking about it earlier this week. It might have been marketed as TSN HD once upon a time, I'm not really sure and it doesn't really matter now. While the Busch races and stuff were tape-delayed before, at least you didn't have to have the Digital package to get at it.

As far as the TSN scheduling goes, it's available right here, minus 3 Cup races and with 9 Busch tape-delays:

While it may not be a major issue for you specifically, it is an issue for quite a few people who do want to watch the races live. It also doesn't help bring in casual viewers or sell advertisers on it when it's at midnight either...

Thank you for sourcing your claim. In researching the entire Rogers channel lineup both on my HD box and on the Rogers site I can find absolutely no such thing as TSN2 on any level, digital or analog. It appears it does not exist. The channel placement for Speed has already been changed to a lower slot within the Ultimate TV Pak (tier two), not shifted to the diginet tier. The info you heard on a local radio program appears to be incorrect.
As for the fact that they will not be showing some Cup races and tape-delaying some others (both common practice as long as they've been carrying Nascar, as nearly as I can recall) is of consequence only to a small handful. I think you overestimate the importance of the issue to both the larger viewing audience and the programming and sales departments at TSN.
