DEMAN TAKES 3RD WIN IN LUCAS OIL CAN-AM MIDGET SERIES

Mack DeMan took the checkered flag for the third time this season as the Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets raced at Sunset Speedway on Saturday night. Twenty one cars took to the track for the 5th race of this exciting series. DeMan, starting 9th in the field, 'inherited' the lead as Adam Racine broke a drive shaft while at the front on lap 15. DeMan also had a little luck on his side as he ran out of fuel on the cool down lap after taking the win.
DeMan was excited in Victory Lane as he said this was his first win at Sunset Speedway since he was 6 years old and won a bicycle race there. "I want to thank my Mom and Dad, Lucas Oil, and car owner Andy Mackereth for all his hard work giving me a great car. A Big Thanks goes to the fans here tonight and the officials of this club." said DeMan.

At the drop of the green flag Daniel Bois took the lead only to have the caution be shown for a spin by Tyler Turnbull and Lucas Smith in turn four. At the restart Racine took the lead followed by Bois, Darren McLennan, Adrian Stahle, and DeMan. The second caution flew for contact between Dave Hickson and Barry Dunn also in turn four. When the green again flew Racine shot out to the front with McLennan now in second place and Bois in third. DeMan moved around teammate Stahle into the fourth spot. Racine opened up a sizable lead over the field as McLennan also got a few car lengths over Bois. DeMan, Stahle and Rob Neely had a tight race going for fourth place. One lap later DeMan broke free and caught and passed Bois and set sites on McLennan. Racine seemed to have the field covered and the race locked up.

Neely passed Stahle and then Bois and began to reel in McLennan. One lap later Neely passed McLennan and had his eye on DeMan. DeMan was closing in on Racine when disaster struck on lap 15 as Racine's drive shaft gave way and he went up to the wall in turn three and stopped. The red flag came out as fluid spread on the track. Some of the hot fluid got on Racine and quick actions by Race Director Terry Watts and his infield officials came to Racine's aid. Racine was ok but his car was done for the night.

After the cleanup, the green again was shown as DeMan was now in charge with Neely in second. McLennan held on to third followed by Stahle and Bois. Stahle began to fade and a wiring issue and had him retire into the pits one lap later. Caution came out for a spin by Dylon Smith in turn one tightening up the field again for the restart. DeMan again took the lead as Neely was on his tail. McLennan battled with Bois and Tommy Kyle moved into the top five.

With less than five laps to go DeMan held the lead as Neely held strong trying to catch and pass DeMan. With two laps to go McLennan, running in the third spot, got loose in turn one, spun and collected Kyle. Kyle went off on the hook and McLennan went to the back of the field for the final restart. Bois was now in third with David Balych in fourth and James Gray, in his 1st start this season, rounded out the top five.

This last green flag gave Neely his final shot at DeMan but he didn't have enough as DeMan was not to be denied. DeMan captured his 3rd checkered flag of the year with Neely settling for second followed by Bois, Balych and Gray. Heats were won by Neely and Jeff Blackburn. The 'B' feature was won by Kyle.
Of Note...Tyler Turnbull, started 2nd, involved in a first lap crash, went to the rear of the field and made his way to the front to finish 6th. Chris Bauman started 19th and had a great run finishing 8th.

The Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets next head north to Barrie Speedway on Saturday, July 19th for race #6 of their 49th season.
