Shadow's Report - Great Canadian Weekend
« on: September 01, 2006, 11:28:44 PM »
Great Canadian Weekend Night 1 - APC Late Model Match Race Challenge + Challenger Motor Freight Trucks final/Championship Night

Match Race Showdown

They ran time trials to determine the starting grid. The top 5 in Trials were Vanderwyst (new track record), Pearn, Kennington, Quarrie and Sheridan. Sorry I didn't get any times. Vanderwyst was low 18s.

So now the 16th guy races the 1st, 15th races the 2nd, 14th races the 3rd, and so on. They had to come out of turn 4 side by side, and they didn't wave green until they were almost at the start line. If they didn't cross the line side by side, they had to go around and do it again, which happened a couple of times. The high groove seemed to be working OK with the traction stuff laid down, but as a rule whoever got out front stayed there. Each race was only three laps long.

Round 1

Vanderwyst vs Wright
- No Contest, Vanderwyst by a half a straight

Pearn vs Fletcher
-No contest, win to Pearn

Hathaway vs Stewart
- Stewart gives Hath a good run staying right with him. Hathaway by a length

Kennedy vs Doerr
 - Good try by Doerr, but win goes to Kennedy

Kennington vs Tyler Brown
-No contest. Win to Kennington

Quarrie vs Fantin
-Win to Quarrie

Lindsay vs Elliott
-There was some drama in this one. Elliott gets the jump at the green flag and gins a length or two on Lindsay. Lindsay reels him back in. White flag lap, Lindsay gets his bumper under Elliott. They touch in 1 and 2 and both go spinning. Both sitting in turn 2 stalled and pointing the wrong way, but no caution. Both guys frantically trying to fire their cars. Elliott's fires first, he spins it around the right way and spins his tires all the way down the backstretch with Lindsay right behind him. Elliott wins by a couple lengths. Interview afterward, Lindsay complains that the start wasn't fair and criticises the officiating.

Sheridan vs Forth
- Win to Sheridan

Round 2

Vanderwyst vs Hathaway
- Vanderwyst is huge fast (watch out for him on Sunday) Win to Vanderwyst by a couple lengths.

Kennedy vs Pearn
- Pearn's got the faster car and jumps out front. But Kennedy gives chase, and going around 3 and 4, Pearn drifts high and Kennedy gets by to take the lead. Next lap Pearn's got Kennedy lined up, they get together in 4 and Pearn spins it. Win to Kennedy.

Elliott vs Kennington
-  Good try by Elliott, but Kennington proves faster. Win to Kennington

Sheridan vs Quarrie
- Win to Sheridan

Round 3

Vanderwyst vs Kennington
- Vanderwyst, who is easily the fastest car out there, somehow finds a way to lose this one. Win to Kennington.

Kennedy vs Sheridan - (They figured this'd be the race with the fireworks.)
-The two are leaning on each other coming around to get the green, but manage to keep it straight. They go side by side for a spell, but Sheridan manges to get out front and stay there.

Final - Sheridan vs Kennington
- First lap is raced side by side, then Kennington pulls ahead to win.

KENNINGTON wins 1st Match Race Showdown

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Challenger Motor Freight Trucks - Final Points night

Truck Heat 1
76-Schwartz and 10-Bloemendal start on the front row. Schwartz jumps out in front, followed by 0-Roy. Roy puls alongside and they race side by side for three laps, until Roy finally completed the pass. Bloemndal has some truck trouble spilling a bit of oil. He'll be back for the feature driving Roy's Truck. 1st to Roy, 2nd to Schwartz, 3rd to 56-Showler

Truck Heat 2
Final is 1st to Verberne, 2nd to Fothergill, 3rd to 11-Kirchner

Feature16-Hosang and 76-Schwartz are the front row. Devon Bloemendal is driving Bud Roy's 0 truck. The top 4 in points are scattered thru the field...32-Robblee starts 6th, 8-Porter starts 10th, 9-Fothergill starts 13th and 25-Powell starts 14th. On the first lap, theres a shmozzle in 3 and 4 involving Fothergill and Porter. Caution comes out and by the time they get sorted out, Porter is at the back of the field and Fothergill is 9th.. Robblee heads into the pits with mecahnical trouble. The 0 Truck comes in, and now that Bloemendal is being scored, he gets out and Roy jumps back in the truck.

On the restart, Hosang beats Shwartz to take the lead. Porter is blasting his way through the field. By lap 4, Fothergill is up to 4th. Then Robblee and 4-Walzak get together on the fronstretch and Robblee makes contact with the turn 1 end of the pit road wall. Caution. At the caution flag, Fothergill is up to 2nd, Porter has battled up to 11th

On the restart, Fothergill gets past Hosang. Shwartz is 3rd. The big battle is further back for 4th with Johns, Zagarodny, Windis, Porter and Powell all racing together. Windis bobbles and begins falling back. At the halfway mark, Fothergill is on the run, and Porter is up to 5th with the field getting a bit spread out now. Powell is up to Hosang battling for 2nd when caution flies again...as Fothergill's night goes up in smoke and a big oil slick...and Hosang is in 1st again. (Lot of people cheering for Hosang tonight)

On the restart, Hosang gets in front again. By lap 20, its a 4 car battle with Hosang, Verberne, Powell and Porter all running together. Disaster strikes Porter as he comes into contact with the lapped car of 14-Braunton, and ends up spinning down the backstretch. Caution with 5 to go, and Porter goes to the back again.

Now Powell makes a move. Hosang drifts high in turn 4 and Powell gets by for the lead. Hosang seems to be having trouble. a lap later, she loops it in 1 and 2, but no caution. Porter is on the move again.

At the checkers its 1st to Powell, 2nd to Verberne, 3rd to Roy (scored as Bloemendal), 4th to Zagarodny, and 5th to Porter.

Kudos to Todd on his first ever feature win and the Truck championship. There were victory donuts, a thank you to the good "Lord Baby Jesus", and some cries of "Shake and Bake!"  When it all got settled down Todd also made a brief remembrance of Dave Lawrence.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was also a King of the Hill which I didn't stay for, (if anyone wants to jump in there with results.)

Stay tuned tomorrow for the Street Stock Year end final, Powerade Modified, and Enduro All Star Race.

They've cancelled all on track activity for Cayuga and moved it to tommorow. So the APC 300 will be without DJ and Hathaway

Too bad. I have to admit though, as cool as that would be, the math wasn't adding up for me about those two making it back for the Delaware show...not unless they found a patron saint with a helicopter.  But then again, math was never my strong suit.

As of 1pm Saturday, it looks like a really steady, but light, rain here in London.  Really looking forward to the Street Stocks last hurrah tonight....think I'll head out into the corn and do a little blond whiteboy's version of an anti-rain dance.  8)

Here - 5 mins from the track, very light rain right now…  Can’t even hear it against the roof.

The forecast I’m looking at shows the rain pandering off towards the evening.  Races have been run at the speedway with “big green radar blobs” on top of the track (Twin 75’s), so nothing surprises me anymore.  Hopefully it all clears up!

I’m no meteorologist – I just play one on message boards.

Well, these rain dances take a while to work you know.  :P

(looking out my window, I think I mighta made it worse.)

SIDE note: Upon checking the CASCAR forum, it looks like the 200 lap CASCAR race in Cayuga is gonna go at 7:30 tomorrow night. If you're hardcore and want to see both Delaware and Cayuga's show, it could happen.

If anyone's up for that and don't mind me hitching a ride, that'd be awsome. We could split the gas.  (I kinda promised the wife she could have the car after Delaware was over on Sunday)

For what it's worth, It was my understanding that there was to be a helicopter chartered for both DJ and Hathaway from Cayuga on Sunday. But with Ernesto screwing things up here, we wont see that dramatic enterance.

I sure hope the Street Stock gang gets their last hurrah at some point. I was looking forward to that almost as much as the big one tomorrow.

Suppose they'll be time to squeeze a Street Stock feature in tomorrow? (just qualify em based on points)

There is a rain date on the schedule for Monday.  That would make sense to use, then the enduro's could run their race as well.  Unless of course, it rains tomorrow.
